well the ignition has been playing up some time on me 200 tdi but now it willl start on the key but wont turn off you have to put it in gear and stall it

i think it may be the faulty ignition switch,i took covers off to find a mash of wires, the blue wire has been cut and replaced with the red
and the black wire has been cut and left, the headlight main beam/dip work off a different switch but turn on on the stalk god knows why

so qs is is there a wire on the ignition switch i can put an inline switch into to turn engine off?

Obviously you have tried the stop solenoid , re ; the switch , Im sorry I dont have the 200 book with me but when I am home I will look it up .

lets hope tomoro is as nice as today was weather wise so i can try and resolve this problem

Hello mate do you know where the stop solenoid is? Just in case, it(s on top of the injection pump and has one wire going to it.

It opens with voltage and when the volts stop, it closes - usually. This cuts off the fuel supply so the engine stops.

You could try rigging up a temporary cable from the solenoid to the battery, start the engine, then with it ticking over pull the wire off the battery and the engine will stop.

TDi 200 ignition switches -which includes the switch and all the wires terminating in a plug which gores into the cars loom, can be had for relatively small money.

We had one go on our first Disco and with this switch it was a very easy fix: STC1435 | Steering Column Lock and Ignition Switch Assembly

Good luck

Dave

cheers for that i will try and eliminate all options tomoro

a knackerd pump wouldnt cause the symptons its electrical which would suggest stop solenoid or ignition switch or maybe ignition relay theese are the 1st things i will be checking tomoro, will post my findings

OK,the simple way to test is to switch off the key. When it doesnt stop, open the bonnet and pull the connector off the solenoid of the pump.If it still dont stop yer pump is knackered.I cant be bothered to explain why.

you can actually just buy a new solenoid. never done it myself, but it's possible. if the solenoid's the problem, then it's got to be cheaper than buying a whole new pump!

if you have metal swarf stopping solenoid working correctly pump is buggered but try pulling wire off solenoid to see if fault with ignition system ,to change a solenoid you need a 15/16 or 24mm open ended spannner with jaws ground down thin to get enough room to undo it

you can pick up a new solenoid for pennies compared to a new pump

people reccon a solenoid can only fail in the engine stop position but ive seen a fair few instances where its failed in the engine run position

even if you do the pulling the wire off the solenoid thing and it does keep running its not nesecarily the pump at fault

if this does happen give the solenoid a couple of taps with the handle of a large screwdriver to see if the solenoid pin drops and shuts off the engine

And when he removes it and finds all the swarf stuck to the back of it he can chuck a new pump in it to go with the new solenoid.;):p:p:p
