Hello everyone,
My landy has been driving me mad for about 4 months now.

It started with the M & S lights flashing when put in reverse. However this only happened after the vehicle le had just been started. After ive been driving for a bit it was ok.

This then progressed to the vehicle not not wanting to start from cold. This was also put down to the xyz switch and the starter inhibitor. When this happened if it moved the gear selector slightly it would start.

First off I changed the battery as I hear low voltage cab cause these issues. I bought a new optima but the issues carried on.

I eventually bought a new xyz and fitted it. For a bit all was well but this started to play up about a week later.

I took the vehicle to a landy specialist who plugged it in to a machine. They said that the xyz wad correctly positioned and working ok.

The m and s lights have not come on since (about 3 weeks ago) but the starting issue still remains but again only when cold.

Twice in the last 2 weeks I have gone to start it and all I get is a click. Usually after a few clicks it will start but twice it has refused.

The local landy garage has said I need to change my gearbox wiring loom and have no other ideas.

It seems odd that these issues only occur when cold

I'm a now getting desperate as u need the disco to be reliable!

Many thanks I advance.

Would the xyz inhibitor also cause a click If it was stopping it from starting or would it not alow power to the solenoid at all

The only thing is it sounded just like this when I had issues withe xyz switch and when it was checked on the machine it showed a inhibitor miss read or similar...

So I've been out side checking things. I'm happy it's not the inhibitor as when I try to start in in gear there is no click. In park I can hear a loud click from the starter solenoid.
I've tried tapping the starter and solenoid but it's not helped.
I've checked the battery and the voltage is 10.5. So thats now on charge but still only gets a click
Checked the alternator and that's covered in oil from a knackered ace system.

That low voltage indicates that the battery is probably the source of your problems. If the voltage is low it can start but give symptoms such as the M&S lights flashing. A good fully charged battery should show at least 12.7 volts. I see you've fitted a new one but does it have the correct capacity and CCA rating?

Should be ok it's an optima red top from a land rover garage.
I've thrown so much money at it recently Ive decided to chuck some more at it and try a new starter.

Thanks for all your help. Turns out it was the starter solenoid. Typical but that and the xyz failed at the same time.
Changed the solenoid and all is well
However something else is now playing up. I'll start another post......
