Td5 110 has 159000 on clock. Fitted a new denso starter 12 months ago which has only done 3 thousand miles this year. Quite suddenly yesterday it wouldn't spin over. Starter sounds lovely spins than just as its about to fire up there is a horrid crunch and nothing repeat a couple of times and all is well. Starts better warm . It sounds like the starter is jamming on the fly wheel and I honestly thought it had seized up the first time. Not sure where to start anyone had something Similar?

Sounds like ring gear teeth damaged.
Could of course be the new starter gear teeth, but if thats damaged its most likely the ring gear that has damaged it.

Just a thought is the td5 a reduction type starter?

It's a reduction gear starter motor, it says so on the box which I still have! I'm going to check it hasn't come loose tomorrow if not it looks like clutch and flywheel had better be done. I know the clutch has done 75000 miles so maybe time to bite the bullet. Annoying cos I was just going to swap it for a disco 2 doesn't want to leave I guess

thanks james just looked up cost for repair duelmass flywheel and clutch and my eyes watered have a spare starter here so if nothing obvious will swap it over and see.

Get it out quick, if it is duff then you may be lucky and get a warranty swap if it is a year old, that said, I know some Denso stuff carries two years warranty.

Took it out ,cleaned it up with derv and wd40 wasn't springing back at first but loosened up,put it back and all is well.
Landy has sat about a bit for the last 6 months I guess they need to work. Thanks all

Had that exact problem and solution on a Focus. Clutch dust had caked onto the shaft which the toothed wheel slides on. Hope you dried all the derv and wd40 off before you put it back in or it might help to gunk it up again.

Bloody Hell! I spoke too soon..went out yesterday nothing ,click and then repeated tapping from starter, now recently if i keep trying it goes so i did until i smelt burning! starter hot and smokey so i decided to get a new one as this denso had just it appears run out of warrenty 2yrs 1 month old..any way i got a friend to pull me out to see if it would jump start before removing starter as i wanted to put it on ramps, it wouldnt ,as soon as i took my foot off the clutch it locked up, tried several times always the same and as she was thinking i was going to rip off her rear cross member she towed me to the ramps . i refitted new starter and charged battery which is a year old and charged fine, changed he oil and filters while it was there went to start and just the same starter clicks then repeatedly clicks i dont think the flywheel is cranking hence the failure to jump start .reluctant to just keep trying incase i fry the new starter.. it was driving fine ,really well has just had new fuel lifter pump and presure regulator all genuine. Has it seazed up? could that happen onernight? bit worried.

Ok more info ,there is no diesel in the oil i just went and checked ,fitted a starter cable from neg on battery to shiny bit of chassis went to start went click then nothing no light, no dash lights ,dead all over!! so i assume i blew something though i beleive there is no fuse between starter and live on battery .stumped and i have a christening to go to in dorset this weekend, bugger
