Dropped my elderly mum off at her house last night, she closed the nsf door with an extra bit of shove just to be sure its shut as mi mam likes to make certain, bless her :D I heard the slam but never thought anymore about it and drove home.
Anyway this morning I noticed this big crack in the windscreen - starts from the outer edge inward so I can only think it was caused by the door being slammed - Just thought I'd share and hope it doesn't happen to anyone else.

Brack.

It's more likely the high temperature at the moment has caused the crack.
I expect there is a tiny chip at the edge of the glass from which the crack has propagated. Is the crack on the inner or outer layer?

Its cracked on the outside layer Nodge, the crack has started on the edge under the rubber at the base of the windscreen.

I bet it is where the windscreen rests on the piece of metal which it should not be touching I had the same after having it replace by auto windscreens I got in touch with my insurance and they sent a AA man out and replaced it ,he said they had not done a good job by resting it on the metal tab ,and my insurance did not charge me.

If it's had a new screen then it'll be this ^^^^

Thanks guys,

I've had the Freelander just over a year with no windscreen issues - My insurance has got Autowindscreens to put a new one in on wednesday, so I'll keep an eye on them when they do the job.
Thanks for the tip.

On the plus - side, having a new windscreen is ace! it really does highlight how ****ty the old one really was, even if it looked ok.

I used to do a lot of motorway miles and after a really half-assed repair section on a bit of road I traveled a lot, I got 4 burst screens in about 6 months on 3 different cars. I am sure my insurers thought I was taking the ****!

Are you sure it's not a case the crack was always there, but opened up recently? I know of a van driver who had a crack which only appeared over 60mph. Had to take his gaffa for a drive to prove it was there and needed replaced.

It may have been a tiny chip that has been hidden under the rubber strip
on the cowling.
The slam of the door plus the heat recently could have set it off I don't know really - I'll see if the rubber block is there when they come to replace it though ;)

Well I had the new windscreen fitted today :) but unfortunately it was done while I was at work so I didn't get to see if the rubber blocks were there or not :( ...I was going to take some pics while the screen was off for reference ...the guy told my wife that it was a stress fracture.

Yes!! crystal clear and looks brilliant

I understand all of the wiring is in place to support a heated screen. #just saying ;)

That would have been nice :)...but didn't think of it though :(

Cheers all
