What's wrong with my Disco...if anything?

That was something I thought, so I checked.

Laning knocked quite a few pounds out of the back ones, so I pumped them all back up to where they should be and were before.

I was using the book suggested 28F 38B - also tried a tiny increase up to 30F 39B (though the pump gauge probably isn't that accurate - must dig out my proper gauge)


Do different tyres work better on different pressures?
 
Swapped from Pirelli Scorpian road tyres to Goodyear Wrangler AT/S

Same size, width etc.

I expected to lose grip, rather than gain roll. I thought the AT s would have stronger sidewalls.

But yes, that could be it.....
 
It could also be that as your Disco hasn't been offroad before that the linkages/bushes etc were never used past a certain point and 'stuck' a little at that point. Now you've used the suspension a bit (heheheh, OK, quite a lot!) the suspension is a little more supple and is using more of its travel than it did when it was purely road use ... don't forget a Disco has a fair bit of travel which simply isn't used until you hit the rough stuff, now it's 'broke through' the crappy on-road use it's happier to use more travel and is probably working correctly and thus feels more roll-happy. In fact it probably does roll more, because it's working correctly.

That's my theory anyway of why mine with HD springs on feels more supple than a mates with stock springs but which has also never been off-roaded!!! ... ;)

Well it looks OK to me - but then I never looked at it before hand.

Seems to be fastened on in all the right places.

This is a genuine possibility.

13 yrs old, only 35000 miles. Last time off road 10+ yrs ago.

Last 5 yrs barely out of garage.


It's a shame if it is this, coz it means I won't be able to get it back as it was - it was fun overtaking the BMWs and Mercs on the bendy dual carriageways. :D

Anyway, now back and doing the 10 mile trip to work I'm finding the disco different to drive. It seems to have a lot more roll, and bounce - mostly at the back.
It feels a bit like the anti roll bar has been pinched or the shocks have gone


This could be one of three things;

1) I've broken something off road - but the anti roll bar is still there, shocks are still attached and look undamaged

2) It's all due to the new tyres - would it really make that much difference

3) It's all in my imagination - this is a real possibility!!


And yes, I have checked the tyre pressures.....


I just don't seem to have any confidence in the cornering anymore. Before it rolled, but stuck firm. Now it rolls, sticks firm, but feels like it gonna let go and kill me!


Any ideas?

Could well be the tyre swap. I went from kuhmo road tyres to vredistien mud and snows and i think because of the much greater tread depth and possibly just how hard the side walls aren't the ****ing thing rolls around like a trawler in high seas even checked and double checked the tyre pressures and it's just the same.
 
Had a similar 'problem' with my Disco. Bought the thing fitted with Michelin road tyres, very 'communicative' ride (I could tell which side up a coin was) and quite harsh. Changed to Goodrich AT's and what a difference. Ride now smooth and forgiving, but had more roll on cornering. Just have confidence in the car, I still have not come anywhere near it's limits, have not even had tyre squeal (yet!!!!) :crazy_driver:

Have just come back from a 3000 mile jaunt round France, tyres very grippy round the French D & C roads and good off road in the mountains too :)

Sounds to me that you just need to get used to the Disco all over again (FUN!!!!)

if you've gone for off road or laning tyres you will have to slow down anyway.. they have nowheer near as much grip on the road and you will find cornering and braking totally different.. wiat till it rains.. you'll soon slow down ..
