Good day, i've only had my Disco1 tdi/auto since late Jan, ive been picking thru some small issues, new alternator/coolant reservoir, changed all filters and most fluids (but not tranny filter and fluid yet)and generally wondering how good a state of tune the engine is, and what more power I can tweak from it, as I think its a pretty lazy engine.
But I realize that the transmission is part of the lazy feel, altho all of the gears shift through ok, the acceleration from standstill makes me feel the torque convertor has a very high stall, ive also had problems where in reverse gear, trying to reverse up a slope, or even some small object or bad bit of level ground, the vehicle will barely move even with my foot down. 1st gear forward seems better than reverse, and when I put the transfercase into low, the lazy hi stall feeling is greatly overcome, so i've never actually gotten stuck anywhere.

I wanted to ask if this seems in any way normal, or if a particular servicing of the tranny is recommended, again the actual shifting of gears up and down when up to speed in general driving seems fine, tho I make have a look at the kickdown cable.

The 1996MY tdi auto had a power increase to 120bhp with the introduction of EDC electronic diesel control to reduce acceleration times, so if you have an earler model auto then they were a bit "lazy". So I understand from the forums. :)

Hi there, here's a couple of observations:

1. The TDi 300 Disco auto weighs 2250kgs empty - so there's a fair weight to get moving with only 120bhp;

2. The stall speed of the TC is 26-2800rpm so it's quite high;

3. Responsiveness can be improved significantly by:
Putting in a new air filter - they are air-hungry engines;
De-EGR mod;
De-Cat mod;
Tyre pressures at 32psi and 36psi rear for normal running;
Clean out the fuel sedimenter and replace the fuel filter.
Replace auto box oil and filter. Check the oil level with the engine running. Don't touch the kick-down cable/setup unless you absolutely have to.

If you do that lot the car will feel more responsive.

Cheers
Dave

Ok thanks, I had forgot to mention, from new there is no EGR, and no cat convertors, as there didn't seem to be any such emissions market requirements down here (still isnt).
The high stall that you mention of 26-2800 pretty much explains it all, very little happens below 1800 or so.

From Daves list all that remains to do is:
Fuel sedimenter cleanout
Auto fluid filter with fluid drain and refill
Raise front pressures

I suppose I could just VERIFY kickdown adjustment settings with the rave manual, without trying to tweak for results.

If there is a slope or low curb or obstacle, yes

Different engine I know.... but I don't have to floor the throttal when climbing a kerb but do have to blip the throttal and over she goes, its the same I reverse up my sloping drive a few blips or a very light throttal does the job, if I had the pedal to the metal I'd be through my garage door and that's been the just same for the last 24 years of driving autos.

Hopefully that is how your disco will work when fixed. :)

Ok I have to follow up here after having read the very long sluggish disco thread about tweaking the injector pump http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/f8/sluggish-disco-not-any-more-146991.html. This was the first time i've read about these adjustments in such amn understandable way I felt was a real practical guide.
I did the main tweaks described here, focusing on the offboost control , and I have to say the results have eliminated any feel that a tranny problem exists.
The 'stall' feels much lower rpm,
most importantly I don't have to floor the pedal on a slope to get it in motion from 1st or reverse, it feels quite normal and torquey now
My general driving around town happens more around 1/3 throttle than 2/3 as before.

It was physically obvious these injector pump adjustments had never been done before on this motor, pending a coolant temp gauge before doing any further adjustments, I am now quite pleased with the engine and tranny performance.
