Hi all

Have had a search through the forum and tried to find a problem that sounds like the one I am having with my 2004 TD4. Its got about 105k miles and owned for 16months and the clutch and associated parts replaced (as recommended on here) about a year ago.

Anyway the problem is that the drive train has become really noisy not whining (well the car at any rate) but almost sounds like a droning noise that appears only when moving and increases with speed. If I press the clutch it makes no difference to the noise. The noise appears to be coming from middle of the car difficult to tell exactly where.

I realise it is difficult to describe a noise, but has any one had a similar "experience"?

Thanks

Sounds like could be one of your vcu support bearings. Easy enough to inspect and check for any obvious damage. Not too difficult to fix either. You should be able to find something if you do a search. Do you know if the vcu has been changed in its lifetime?

Agreed ....you could simply drop the whole prop assembly off and take it for a run to confirm or you can undo support bearings whilst supporting Vcu but giving enough clearance to spin bearings by hand to check for play and noise

Good idea mjrimmer......to save dropping whole prop shaft off initially, you can carefully lower down vcu onto an axle stand by releasing bearing mounting bolts, obviously ensuring weight is on axle stand and not hanging on u.js. Should help identify a rough bearing. I never thought of that with mine but bearinfs were in visibly sh*te condition anyway. :)

Thanks for your responses. Im not able to access the underside of the car at present - wont bore you all with the details :) . Decided to book into garage for a check up. Tyres at front need replaced and which was to be done this week but decided to hold off and work out the possible problem just in case it was a biggie.

Will do a search on the removal of the prop & also see what the garage says - if not too pricey then they can do it, otherwise time to call in some assistance.

When you have the tyres changed, ensure you fit the same type as tyres currently on the the rear, fit the new tyres to the rear moving the current rears to the front ;)

This is a must as nodge says else you will be back on here crying when you fubar your ird, diff or both

Nodge/Rim - will deffo be doing this! Reading the posts on this forum has me fearing the worst. Car in garage first thing tomorrow - fingers crossed! Will post the outcome.
Cheers

I have had what sounds like the same noise from under my 2002 TD4 for about a week now.
I was trying to work out what it could be but this thread has more or less confirmed it.

I am in the same position as you i.e I can't get under it myself.

So I am waiting with baited breath for your outcome and COST! lol

Hi Islay101.
Garage callled and advised the think it is a knackered PS.wheel bearing. Can't fix until wednesday :(
.

Thanks Rim. The Garage quoted between £150 & &200 to do this work and replace two front bushes (car clatters over bumps). Only hope they have identified the right part - they do have a good reputation for quotes and quality. I Have been happy so far with the quality of the work to date. They did the Clutch replacement work and had no problems.

I got a quiet freebie! Propshaft bearings were shot - still to speak to the garage to find out the extent of work done. Will provide info and costs.
Cheers!

Hi Cost of works done by the garage:

Drop links x 2 = £34.80
Prop shaft bearings x 2 = £71.95
Labour = £96
Total = £202.75

Hope this helps others as a guide. Comments on value welcome :)
