I have a main dealer fitted warn winch, about 3 years old.

In my stupidity yesterday i managed to slice through most of the 5 core remote control cable when the winch cable rubbed across it. Anyway, my daft mistake, spliced cable together and all is working fine.

However, i would have thought that a fuse would have blown but obviously it didn't.

Is there a fuse in the circuit and if so, where would a main dealer fit it?

The solenoid is under the passenger seat and all that is connected to that are two fat red cables, one from battery and one from solenoid to winch, plus a very thin black and a very thin white cable- i presume wired to the isolator switch on the dash but i could be wrong.

many thanks in advance

mike

There is no fuse on the winch. Also, the isolator on the dash may not work in the event of the solonoid it activates sticking. I would put an additional isolator on the main battery cable too.

many thanks ratty

that explains why i couldn't find it!

why no fuse? i'm no electrician but if lights and horn etc need a fuse why not a winch which has greater potential to be damaged/cause damage by overheating, short circuiting, etc.

thanks

The small wires that you chopped through are low current wires that activate a solonoid which is basically a heavy duty relay type switch so don't require a fuse.

With lights or heater motors etc there is a set amp rating/draw for them. The draw on a winch motor varies according to what is being pulled and how many wraps of cable are on the drum. There are too many variables so a BIG fuse would be needed. If a short were to occur the chances are your landy would burn before the fuse blew. If you put a smaller fuse on it, it would keep blowing when you used the winch.

if yu wanna fit a 200Amp fuse - go ahead, but if it is continuously drawing 200Amps, yo battery is going to melt pretty soon. but DO fit an isolator switch , that isn't accessible from outside the vehicle when parked. Mine is under the bonnet, so that the bonnet has to be raised to use the winch (and it stops the cable flying back thro the windscreen).

winching - yes - windscreen protection - nope.

aint yu seen the pics of me pulling Boomer out from the ****ty stuff on Salisbury, and tree removal wiv Grippa?

Why din't you use the winch to remove the tree. I woulda thought it'd be easier than using Grippa to lever it out?
Errr... you have met Grippa ain't you? Bet you a quid he just scared the tree out :D

ere yar.:D
