Spotlight wiring help

I have recently come into possession of a 1986 110, previous owner had fitted off road driving lights but not wired them in. I have now done so as per the diagram on attached site.

the problem I have is they don't work!

I have disconnected the connector of blue/grey cable just behind the driver side headlight and spliced cable from headlight/main beam switch/new switch supply cable.

these are my findings:

all 3 cables joined - all existing lights work correctly except spots which are inoperative.

with the main beam switch cable disconnected - driver headlight very dim- passenger headlight full beam & spots operate correctly.

can someone please help as i'm getting very frustrated at what must be a quite simple fix and just can't get my head around it!!!

Could get even worse if they did work.
You might have an electrical fire!

Old, tired, oil soaked wiring, increased loads that the original wiring wasn't designed for, "splicing" into existing wiring.
All things that don't always lead to good results.

If you want to retain the spotlights, I would try and find an unused fuse holder in the fuse box, if any, and wire from that, via a dedicated switch, to the lights, and thence to an earth.
Or fit a new live, with switch and fuse, and run to the lights and then to earth.

Or else find an auto electrician who will do it for a fee.

just thought id post the solution. for some reason it doesn't like it when tapped into at the headlight bulb connector. connecting it to the spotlight warning light fixed the issue. dedicated switch and fuse fitted.
