hey guys, im endlessly searching the net for a defender 90 to have as a project car till i can afford the insurance (due to a ban)! im looking at spending under 2K which i know wont get me much but im willing to graft my arse off to end up with a worldy! the trouble is im not sure what im lookign at as ebay descriptions are not always the most accurate!!
im tempted by this but am i buying a hunk of junk???

Item number: 190703784653

Advice please guys!!

cheers!

you will have to put link on ?
2k will get you a runner though you will have to graft to do some work !!!
also check all the dear bits a magnet is good for this for bodged filler fibre glass ( bulk head corners)
check bulkhead, chassis, rear cross member, engine and box ,t/box front and rear axels
if these are ok and just need minor repairs then your ok as these are the dearest parts to replace
good luck mate

could be a problem as the older engine is not as good as a tdi 200/300
gutless really but not a bad engine though
200tdi in my opinion is the best landy engine !!!
i would check everything i said and you wont go far wrong mate

i looked at some 2-3k defenders, a few in the 1500-2k range were sheds, hanging and holes galore...youd have to be a competent skilled welder , really a 2k`er needs to be stripped and sorted right out....its ok if you can do all the welding and labour yourself,if you can tdont even entertain it...if you bought one and think il get the welding done here n there and have to pay for it...youl wind up spending fortunes and be forever chasing the dream and constantly driving around in something thats rubbish really with a leaky horrible cab, persished seals on everything- saw that on every sub 2k one

when you look at 2k ones in the flesh, and look underneath and around them, everything looks crap really, rusty,perished......you just think ...2k for this, its ready for the scrap heap !! lol

looking at the paint job on that one, its got fillered to death written all over it...

Yeah I agree with what your saying thick lashings of paint can only be hiding something terrible! I will just have to keep looking and putting
In the overtime to increase my budget! Cheers guys!

i looked around for a defnder thinking 3 grand for something ok, no chance ! 4k-still bad really, although all depends where you live how far you want to travel, looked at some for 3k range they said on phone yeah its ok solid just tatty ish. and they were hanging, holes in the floor by seat bases and loads of chassis rot...if id travelled 2 hours id of been livid, even wasting £10-15 in fuel angered me

thing is- you just dont get much for your money, 3 or 4 or even 2 grand is still a wad of cash, handing over 2-3k for something that looked bad, crap to sit in, knackered interior and generaly is like something on its last legs, seemes ridiculous, so bought a p38 instead for 2 grand that you get a hell of a lot for your money, although id like a defender still im not parting with vast sums of money for a shed ! 4.5-5k seems to be the range for a half decent defender

My main problem is I don't have access to a car to go and view any landys and I can't ask the mrs and our 10 week old son to drive me round the north west looking at sheds lol! May have to concede that a defender may be out my reach at this moment in time! I was tempted to stretch to 3 for something half decent but from why your saying that won't even get me anywere!

this looks and sounds good for the money-if it gets no bids ring and offer him 3 grand for it ? , i suppose its all random on whats near you, saw some good looking ones like above for 3.5-4k range but too far away to gamble on the journey really with a 7-8 hr round trip

but what you do have in your favour- is its summer,no winter panic snow tax prices, cash is king at the moment and the right time to be looking for a bargain, that above one might have a 4.5k asking price/value come winter maybe ...

way i saw/see it as this.. the current climate things are not really selling fast or for top money, if im spending 2,3,4 grand on any car- i want a bargain and getting good value for my money, sub 3k defenders you dont really get that, certainly not 2k, its all ok if you can get one for 2k as a real project and do a lot of welding/resto/body/running gear work yourself and put in the hours, if you cant (like myself) then they are definatly best avoided

You can be lucky. I looked at loads and eventually picked up a 93 200tdi defender for £2500. It needed some welding (footwell) and seals for an mot, but it was a good honest, pretty untampered with vehicle.
My biggest advice would be to take someone with you who knows their landys. I did and it paid off a couple of times when viewing vans advertised on e-bay as good, to find they were infact ****e.
Happy hunting

I live in Oldham just on the edge of saddleworth! That Subaru look one is a nice straight looking motor but it out of my price range at the min, as daft as it sounds id prob be able to afford it come January but not at the moment!
As far as working on a landy goes I'm pretty sure I (mainly friends who have experience with cars) can cope wit most things but with work comes cost! Major engine work is a no no for me but body work etc is fine! If only we could just click our fingers and poof there it is lol!
Out of interest, how cheap/expensive do u guys find it to insure your landys? Can u get them on a classic car policy? As I mentioned before I have a ban that has just ended so insurance on anything is gonna be sky high!
Cheers guys.

well im yet to buy mine but got a few quotes from £350-550 but i only have 3 years no claims as i lived in Germany for 6 years, but considering landy = £3500-4000 or a mondeo st estate for same money, insurance for landy about 800 cheaper for the year, ive had 2 people crash into me and 2 buses in the last year so the Mrs doesnt want a normal car, she wants to sit above the rest and demanded i buy a 90 lol, if they wanna crash ino me then im sure i wont be the worse off for a change :p

Lol my main reason for wanting a landy is coz I go kayaking and the mrs won't let me put the boat on top of our family car lol! I got a quote to insure me on our 1.2 corsa and it was twice the amount the car is worth lol!
I don't have 3k spare to buy that blue one i can't justify spending that much at this point I'm afraid! Would be a nice one to own though! Lovely colour!
When u looking at getting your landy? U seen any u like?

seen loads m8, just waiting for my solicitor to get off his jollys, had a really bad smash in febuary and just finished sorting stuff out, so probly another 6 weeks or so?

Cool (not about the smash) I've only just finished my ban so need to redo my test now! That is priority 1! Priority 2 is get me a Landy :)
