Viscous Coupling Support Bearings Video

A vid showing my props removed to check and replace support bearings with GKN ones.
I had them replaced 7 months ago for genuine land rover bearings (well I have since learnt from people not to trust that garage, so maybe they were and maybe they werent!)

Video captures sound of bearings when spun unloaded...front if amplified is kinda making the noise im hearing - which Hunters have told me is my IRD.

When the prop is removed I have no whining or bearing growl from the vehicle whatsoever..

So,

The front does sound noisy and worn. Kind of "dry", if you ask me. Seems there's nothing too much wrong with the IRD if all is quiet without the prop on there. OK, not definitive, I know, but it's promising.

Can you tell from looking if they're genuine LR bearings or not?

nice vid mate, I think you.ve answered ur own question,I would definitly say that the bearing is rather noisy compared to your rear bearing, and this noise, under load/torque id expect to be louder too. I think considering price of these bearings and the fact you will be 100% that they've been changed its already off, go for the new ones, probably the cheaper option too compared to IRD.

When I strip the bearings I'll post pics to check if they were genuine.
Ordered some GKN ones from lrseries.com for £34 each so will see what they turn up like.

Fingers crossed i can prove Hunters wrong if replacing bearing fixes it!

p.s i numbered shaft components myself to aid re-fitting!

I hope you do prove them wrong. I know they've got make a living, but you'd no doubt be stung for a new IRD, VCU and support bearings if they did the work. Completely unnecessary, and just a licence to print money. How many people have been shafted in this manner, I wonder?

I think my bearings are up for replacement soon. Keep us posted on the GKN ones. If they're good I will get the same.

What does the noise sound like inside the car?

Helpful video. A good bearing will be virtually silent. When you get the old bearings off if you prise out the seal I bet there's little or no grease in them.

noise in car sounds like a growl growl growl pitch which slows with road speed slowing..like a shot bearing, I'm hoping the hollow props are amplifying the bearing noise?!!

Time will tell-I hope for the garages sake the ones I take off are Landrover ones!!!

Having just last week done mine,I would say it is definitely the Vcu bearings.
Mine sounded just like that when the prop shaft was removed.No real play,just a
bit gritty.
The noise I had started as soon as the wheels started to turn as though something was rubbing or been dragged under the vehicle.
I found it hard to believe the noise that they could make.
Could feel the difference as I backed out of the garage.

aren't landy parts made in India now?
Are they genuine or Britpart?

i just googled as i hadn't heard of India bearings. it looks to me like a company in its own right and not associated with GKN

My front viscous bearing sounded like yours and was quite "lumpy" when turned by hand off the vehicle. But also spun easily when on the prop.

The rumbling noise disappeared after it was changed. It looks as though you might be on the right track.

I seem to remember the oil seals on my bearings being light brown - no idea if this indicates a "genuine" part?

The ones I fitted were genuine GKN.
Yet the markings on the inner race were stamped FAG

Do GKN make their own bearings ? or just driveline systems using other bearing suppliers.

Hi bud, now don't take offence but have you been wearing your official land rover jacket whilst taking these vids? ........it's getting a bit too much anorack for me.
Joking apart that's fukcde, considering mine have now done 75k from new if they're not gkn then I'd be taking the biggest wacking stick to the tossers that fitted them, if they they are gkn the same applies as they must have just tw..ted them in to place without a care for them to fail so Quickly.
In saying that don't hold on to the tw?ting stick too long the arse who screwed up my clutch is back on Monday.....so I'm going to need it myself

I also noticed only one crud slinger per bearing...do they have a crud flinger in the larger bearing rubber hood closest to the UJ's?
