A fellow laner had mentioned to me that he had seen Vinyl wrapped wings on a few laning Land Rovers. Theory is it should protect your paint form the worst of the brambles, especially if you’re driving something a bit newer.

My Landy is going to be part of a display at a festival event soon so when someone suggested they wrap my Defender 110 I thought I’d give it a go so the old girl was looking her best.

Turned out great and I love the look of it. Jury is out as to whether it will protect it or she’ll shed her skin like a big black snake on the first thorny bush!!

Not sure i like it as a paint replacement. Can see the appeal with graphics and patterns. Good coverage.

I must admit my first thought was "OMG it will end in tatters" but then I thought about my mates wrapped RX8 when he side swiped the armco at Brands Hatch and realised that the vinyl is quite strong. It will mark easily though so bushes and branches will leave it looking pretty scratched but it will protect the paint.

now that i really like.very proffessionaly done as well.looks fantastic.i wonder what the cost is though.

It looks fairly labour intensive - at least as much work as a rub down and respray by the look of things, so I'd guess the cost would be in the region of a good workshop paintjob.

They took the lights and handles off, but left the number plate light on. I wonder why?

Looks very nice at the end though, and the embossing is a nice touch.

Looks great... Who was the company and how much did they charge?

Edgy Designs. There is a festival in the local town and they saw my car was going to be there as part of a 4x4 club so it was their way of getting themselves promoted I guess. Basically I don't know what they would have charged retail.

The benefit, that I didn't know about, is that its classed as a temporary colour change so you don't have to tinker with your log books. How many of us have given the old Landy a splash of paint and not thought to register the change?

Yeah it was a full weekends work. I guess its more to protect newer paint jobs than fix old one's. The number plate lamp was my fault. I built in a storage drawer system inside and might have blocked in the access to it..................Doh!!! They weren't very happy with me!! :)

just found a company that does this wrapping that is not far from my home, sent them an email asking for a price to do my D2.:D

It would be interesting to know what the cost is. I'll ask the guys who did mine what they would have charged. They did have to drill out all the chequer plate and take off my tree sliders and I guess not everyone has that

one company i just looked at said they start at £695.no upper price though,to many variables i suppose for that.

Yeah and especially with a Defender that is modified for lanes. They did say some bits of mine were a compromise of practicality over quality. For instance I didn't want my snorkel taking off.

I just did a quick google around and the only other Defender wrap I can find cost £1,200.

ok,well i suppose a decent respray would cost that, maybe more??

A local place to me carbon wrapped the roof on my old evo, they was doing a full wrap on a x5 at the time price was 1100 notes. Would of thought landy would be a little cheaper to do, not as many curves.

Believe it or not curves make it easy. Its the right angles that you cant bend the vinyl around neatly.

I can see why you'd do it to a very expensive car such as the M3s, Ferraris, Lambos, the X5 etc if you want to try matt black or other colours that could be a big risk if it was permanent and obviously is brilliant for graphics.

But as a alternative to paint, I think its a silly idea as it will never last as well as a good paint job that's protected with a wax etc.

Works out at nearly the same cost either way anyway if you had to pay for either vinyl or paint.

Also, I'd doing matt black paint, its very cheap too and you could probably paint a Defender three times in matt black for the price of one vinyl wrapping.

Possibly but if you change a colour via painting you have to register it on your log book. If you want to go back to original the vinyl will heat and pull off and the claim is that it will protect, which I've yet to test. Also matt black is a mare to clean off isn't it in paint form. This is wipe clean vinyl.

Non of that is proven yet but time will tell

and that is a huge cost / inconvenience .... my local post office is almost 400 metres from my house and first class stamp costs are eye watering :) lol

personally I am fortunate to have spray kit and at roughly £70 for paint n thinners i'll stick with that but fair play if u have a really new / tidy rover may be an idea

cheers steve

good mate has had his evo done but he has been told by the company it'll last prob 5 years and need doing again?? looks stunning though

cheers steve

Oh yeah, has a limited life of 5 years but then I cant see an amateur paint job lasting far beyond that!

As you say, maybe more worth while on a newer motor or something that is already tidy and could be protected.
