Bought an ex MOD 2009 2.2 TDCI from a car auction about 3/4 years ago and have been throwing money at her ever since, absolutely loving it.
With only 10k on the clock and a full LR service history courtesy of the ministry I was confident she was a good one to take the plunge with. Started out as a lovely canary yellow - couldn't miss it and thats what caught my eye. The paint job however was not the best, inside and engine bay etc were still factory white, LR/MOD not sure who had sprayed it rather haphazardly. I got some new wheels and a local bodyshop to black out the roof and wheel arches/grill etc but the yellow started to grate on me so i tried giving wrapping a go.
I used 3M 1380 series wrapping film, and whilst this is a fantastic product, the defender is just too tricky to wrap, unless you give it over to a professional along with loads of £££. Half way through wrapping it I realised it just wasn't going to cut the mustard so stripped it off and finally got my wallet out and took it to a LR specialist to take it apart and do a proper respray. Very happy I did as realistically it just needed it. Went for Keswick green, was sad to see the yellow go as it was a real head turner, alas.
As I was at it, I bought a raft of cosmetic upgrades like grilles/LED lights/wheel carrier/side steps etc and I'm happy with how its turned out. Got a full terrafirma suspension kit as well with some spacers for what its worth. Swapped out the sliding windows for solid pane fixed windows as I cant stand how rubbis/problematic they can be. I also blasted a load of cash on getting optimill hinges all round, as well as screen blocks and door handles and bonnet hinges. Although these are eye wateringly expensive, they are very well made. I also got their steering wheel boss lock.
Its got an alarm and immobilizer, but would take anyones reccomendations on a decent tracker.
Still just a metal can at the moment, the next step is the interior, although I'm in the old familiar situation of battling leaks, which I want to sort (god willing) before any soft furnishing. Looking to sound deaden the whole inside and box out the back with storage in favour of the tumble down seats it had (for sale), keeping it simple and utilitarian.
