I have just recently bought a Freelander 1.8 XEI 3 door hardback and when i go to take off in first gear a major vibration happens that goes through the whole vehicle. It only happens when the revs are below 2000 anything above that and its ok my first thought was the viscous coupling or the gearbox but not 100% sure its still under warranty but if its an easy fix then wouldnt have to travel the 60 miles to the nearest dealer to me any suggestions as to what it could be?

Hi

I had a similar sympton on my TD4, when pulling away and even sat at idle there was a loud vibration which you could feel through the gear lever, and vehicle.
Had the dealer look at it, and they told me they modified the gear box linkage by chopping a bit of it, so as to balance it.Anyway it went away for about six months, and now it has reared its ugly head again, so far it has been back twice and still the same, they have changed all sorts of bits:(
If they figure out what the cause is, I will post the outcome.

Cheers

hello!

I also have a 1.8 XEI 3 door with the same thing i got the dealer to look at it but apparently its just the "nature of the beast" to stop it u have to keep the revs at 2000+ and slip the clutch. hope this helps!

Steve.

With due respect Stownrow, that's a load of bollocks! There's obviously something wrong and it's a copout by the dealer. Hope you didn't part with any hard cash?

nah was all checked under warranty. I got a second opinion with the same result!

it could be ur ird bracket cracked at top fixing bolt, undo the top bolt and see if bracket falls apart

Not to sound thick but what is an IRD bracket as i am a complete novice when it comes to four wheel drives. When i spoke to the dealer he said it could be the gear linkage but cant see how cause it would do it in all gears. I had a similar problem with my RS cosworth and it was the clutch plate warped but lr dealer said there is no way it could be that?

intermidiate ruduction drive unit , the part that takes ya drive to the rear wheels,

just below the power stering pump at rear of engine you should see the bracket holding up the end of ird, it looks like a small gearbox at back of enngine, take out the top bolt it points in towards the engine

if you say you only get it in 1st gear though it might not be that

if that was the fault you should just get it wen you rev engine at standstill
