I mistakenly unscrewed the plunger for the detent spring (I thought it was the overdriven filler) and now the transmitting is Not Working.

Have I just created a big mess or can I fix the problem easily?

As you might have gather I'm not to savvy on most things mechanical.

Thanks
Kevin

just screw it back in and work the red knob lever back then forward

Thanks James for the quick reply

It seems to still be out. But now I just dump gas on the fire. The shifter broke off. It seemed to not want to go into first so I rocked it back and forth then tried your suggestion using the steps below, but I guess I had to much muscle I guess in trying to get in first.

I guess I'm in for it now.

I screwed the plug back. While in neutral I moved the red level from top through neutral to bottom and back up. It did not work. I then did the same while i thought I was in first and second, but again no luck.

Why did you want to unscrew the detent plunger ?

What was the symptoms of the box ? Bad take up on drive ? Sloppy changes ?

Well guys let me answer the first question

Yes it was the brass plug. The one with the spring. I've been on a trip for 3 weeks and had my son in law started it up and did not move her. I got home to check the fluids before I drove her and after I did the detent
plunger. I started her up and put her into gear but she did not move. I checked to ensure the low gear was not in neutral and was not so I assumed that I did it with removing and putting back the detent plunger.

Now the second question is a continuation of the first. I was looking at it upside down and (I really did not want to go here) thought it was the overdrive. Remember I admitted to a lack of knowledge and I have had her only for 2 months.

So then I broke off the swifter. (Once the hole start collapsing stop digging. To late)

I know what your thinking. This idiot does not deserve a Landy, but I have wanted one since I was kid and it was my first match box car so there I am.

Gear levers sometimes snap off, take the bits to a welding shop and get it repaired. Replacement levers aren't expensive, get yourself a spare. In future, if it is reluctant to go into 1st gear, (they all do it now and then), foot off the clutch pedal and back on again and they usually go in. If not try going into 2nd gear and then into 1st. It's just a question of getting the teeth to line up a bit better.
Now, what do you mean by "the transmission isn't working"? Did it seem to go into gear but the vehicle didn't move when you let in the clutch?
Don't worry about the detent cover, as long as the spring isn't lost it should just work ok again when you screw the cover back in.

Thanks Extreedoc

After reading your reply I took a look and it broke off at a poor weld. I'm going to take a look at rewelding as a quick fixed.
I also have to own up. I wondered if it was possible when my son and law had started her up if he had move the over drive into neutral. Mystery of the broken translation solved. On the bright side the replies and looking up solutions helped me to expand my knowledge of my Land Rover.

Again thanks guys
