Uk - Spain -Portugal expedition july 14

Off to Portugal this july 2 landys going so nothing massive a d2 and a 90 td5 , catching a ferry from Portsmouth to Santander then on to Beja in Portugal , just wondered if anyone can give any advice on things to take or be aware of or good routes to take , we are planning to camp on way down ! many thanks in advance !

Pleas drive below the speed limit 1 kmh over and is a 600quid ticket. New traffic laws in SPAIN directed towards the British

Fair enough, nobody wants a fine like that but the 'aimed at Brits' is your supposition.

How it that aimed at Brits?. Notice the use of the word 'could'

thanks guy i did see the post regarding speeding , however i don't intend to be rushing through spain ! as i want to see it all ! and we will be sure to take plenty of pictures for you guys !

How long are you going for and do you have any plans to off road, or just Tarmac?

I plan also to go to Portugal for a couple of weeks in mid October immediately prior to a trip to 3 week trip to North Africa. I want the Portugal section to be off road with camp sites on the way down - I just have to find a way of finding the tracks also - at the moment can only think of using google earth - before setting off and of course a second vehicle would be good.

Would love to come with you again but unfortunately wold not be able to get the time off. I will have used all my holiday entitlement for this year.

If you mean for France, no. It's been revoked I believe.

I've done this in a Range Rover Sport and the views you get are absolutely fantastic!

If you head towards Madrid from Santander instead of heading straight to Portugal you will drive along side some cliffs that are above the clouds.. really nice to drive up there! Although if you have vertigo probably wouldn't advise it as the cliff edges don't have any safety barriers!

I drive approximately 110,000 klm a year around France plus my own private mileage. I have been stopped loads of times for road side checks but have never been asked for the breathalyzer kit. I think even the Gendarme have forgotten this one.

In terms of what to take, what I usually do is work through my day from wake up to bed time and think of every scenario and what I would need for each. ie wake up, brush teeth (toothpaste, tooth brush, water) next, coffee (so water, coffee, milk etc etc) and so on. This method obviously extends through from daily routines to what you'll need for the drive etc. The whole thing is a bit tedious, but it works, and if you write it down, you only need do it once.

I have travelled many times to Portugal without any problem from the GNR. However, if you wish not to be fined for speeding then simply obey the speed limits.
A good campsite with bungalows is camping el astral at Tordesillas which is about a four hour drive from the ferry. But don't drink the house red, it's awful.

We did a trip from here in SW France down to Portugal last September,I can give no advice on off road track there as when we were there the whole of the North of Portugal was suffering severe forest fires.
But....Definately go via the Picos d'Europa,just south of Santander.If you head for Potes,there are a couple of great campsites there,you can get maps of the famous "Jeep track".Not terribly radical but stunning views,and all off road.
Then on our way back,we came via the Pyrenees from Spain to Andora over smugglers pass.Equaly impressive.
The brethalizer law has been revolked in France by the way.

Have fun, I did a bit of Spain and Portugal a couple of yrs ago, they're both beautiful places to visit. Must go back sometime and do more.

Re; French breathaliser law, "it has been obligatory to carry one of these since but there is no penalty for not having one", so I've never bothered.

Sounds like a fantastic trip. We're also heading down that way over summer this year in the FL so it will be interesting to see what areas get recommended for off roading - although currently not through Portugal.
