Right.

Driving back home yesterday... Was on the road for about 2 mins. Slipped into 5th and there was a whining noise... Sounded like something slipping - A belt or something. Came out of 5th and it disappeared. Went back into 5th and nothing.

After about another 40 mins of driving and through traffic. Every time I went into 1st to pull away it made a clunking/rattling noise. No loss of power. No juddering. Just the disconcerting noise. I wouldn't say it's a particularly harsh noise. Just sounds like something's loose.

Have the AA coming over tonight but would be great if you guys had an idea that I could maybe suggest to him when he turns up..> An area for him to check.

*** To edit. Sound got A LOT HARSHER when I took it out again with the AA man later ***

Thanks again as always.

Don't think it makes the clunk when the clutch is depressed... I can verify that tonight.

Initial thoughts? (Thanks all)

The AA going to be able to diagnose this sort of thing?

May make a video and post when I get hime.

Didn't know.

Thinks its potentially the gear box or clutch. Makes a strong rattle when accelerating. When the clutch is depressed the sound goes.

Sent you a PM shifty.

Thanks.

Erm. Not sure what that is. Sending it on a flatbed to Shiftys friend at Harding Auto Services to have a look. It needs a service and the AA guy thought it may be the clutch.

Was it a tinny rattle or did it sound more solid?

Is the noise only present when moving or when static too?

Noise was only present when moving and when in gear.

Car needed a service so it can all be done at the same time.

When the clutch was depressed the sound went away. Engaged. Came back.

Shifty says the guys at the garage are good so I have faith that they will accurately diagnose...

Not much more I can do!

To be honest I take some reassurance that this place is round the corner from Shifty and the place he uses.

Ain't much he doesn't know about TD5 Defenders.

As I have said previously - its hard enough to find decent, fair, value for money, traders and when I do I like to spread the good news. I'm not on commission nor in love with him just in case you are wondering.

Malcolm does not need to rip people off.
He does a good job for a fair price and relies upon repeat business and recommendations.
You wont get cheap and nasty nor will you get overcharged.
He knows his stuff and has the latest training and equipment for the mechanics to use.
All of the mechanics are knowledgeable and friendly and have a good reputation locally.

I've been taking my motors there, when I cant or dont want to do the work myself, for 20 years and most everyone I have recommended has continued to use his services long after my introduction.

Haha. Sorry shifty if I went on about that! I think some here may remember that bent garage I went to and told me I needed a new engine... £3000!! Turned out it was a new header tank.

It's a minefield.
