Turning over in position 2, won't start, still turning when take key out

Cheers for that, I've cleaned up this fusebox and I'll give it a try in the morning after the battery has charged up overnight. Glad you told me about leaving it for 5 mins. The shortings will explain why the radio came on oni its own a couple of weeks ago while it was sat on the drive.

if no joy you can bypass that fusebox on the starter solenoid part only as to cut the WR wires from C0028-6 and C0588-5 and join them together cos the problem seems to be a short between F27's circuit and F23 within the fusebox...that fusebox has a complicated circuitry inside and contains the integrated circuit IDM too(see attachments)

The problem with the shorting is solved but now engine still won't start with starter motor going. Its not lack of fuel although it was pretty low I have topped it up and primed it in case of any air in system. Can't check for damp connectors under bonnet at moment cos its p***ing down and I'd be wasting my time.

did it start normally before that? ... if you just made that bypass but didnt change the fusebox there might be other issues there as it might not give feed to the ECU( from fuse F24), also give a good charge to the battery maybe it's tired from so much cranking...the Td5 can crank well but not start if the battery is not in the best shape as the starter 'eats' all the current not letting enough for the ECU to open the injectors... if you measure voltage on the battery terminals and it fails under 10V while cranking you need stronger battery....by the way do you hear the pump running when you put ignition on II?

Pump is running ok. It only started up once when I was parked back up after breakdown brought it back. I'll try to check voltage while cranking but won't be easy on my own and my voltmeter just has points rather than crocodile clips so I need to hold them against the terminals. I know I've just run the battery down a bit trying to start. Got a big van battery on charge at moment to jump from. How long would you recommend to charge the td5's battery to get it virtually fully charged?

Untill it's fully charged...Depends which kind of battery, how weak it is, etc,also depends which kind of charger you have cos if the charger is a smart one it will stop charging it when it's charged...i can't answer better to that question sorry

Voltage dropped to about 8V so will try again tomorrow. Should be plenty of charge in battery, just checked my charger and it should fill the battery up in 24 hours so forget last question.
