I am probably going to have to replace my turbo in a field in north wales. Can anyone tell me exactly what tools I will need to do this as I am going to have to beg borrow and steal from some of my friends in the area.

I have a TD4 02 Freelander 3 door. I don't have the cash to pay a mechanic while I am away on holiday.

I left my tools at home and said it will be fine! Serves me right

You collective input would again would be much appreciated. :)

wouldnt it be better to join the aa, leave it a few days then give em a ring saying its broken down?

Off the top of my head...
-axle stands or ramps
-something to lie on.
-if you are a short-arse a wee footstool or something to stand on when reaching down the back of the engine.
-a general socket set, with several long extensions (one downpipe flange nut is accessed through the left-hand wheel arch so you need enough length to get half way across the car)
-a 1/4" drive socket set with various extensions and flexi joint to get at the turbo mounting bracket and oil return pipe jubilee clip.
-the three main bolts accessed through the bottom of the airbox required some weird female spline drive effort...not torx. iirc I just mashed a smaller socket over the heads)
-general screwdrivers, spanners and a hammer.
-a torch and a small mirror are a great help for seeing awkward stuff.
- A wee funnel and clean oil to prime the turbo
- enough oil for a full oil change including filter and somewhere to pour the old stuff.

However, I would suggest finding a way to get it towed home like joining the RAC or whatever, as its a Land Rover and as such there is always a pretty good chance that something will go wrong leaving you half-way through the job with the car in bits and no way to continue.

+1000 000 on this!

Don't ruin your vacation. Have them come and get it. Like others said,......you could be half way through, when something breaks, and you need to run to get more parts,....etc.

Once I rebuilt a motorcycle on the side of the road (about 100km South of Budapest, Hungary), but it was a two stroke, and I had couple of buddies with me on their bikes to run to Budapest and back, for the parts. It took two days, and sleeping in the freshly harvested wheat field for one night.

I don't want to steal the thread, but I was "young and dumb, and full of cum", riding CZ175 (single cyl 2 stroke) that you can either fill with gas and a 2 stroke oil in the special reservoir (and it would mix it for you), or you could buy "premix" at the station that the attendant would dial in (the year was 1975). Since Hungarian is one of the rare European languages I don't speak, I thought I ordered 4% mix. (back then there was no "self serve" stations in that part of the world)

Filled the tank, took off, and my MF bike was going like NEVER BEFORE! Wow! What a gas Man! It went for a good 120km, when the rings siezed, broke, took chunks out of the piston,......the works.

We were on the way to Brno (today's Slovakia), for the Grand Prix motorcycle racing. The Danube was about 2 miles to the right of the highway, and if it was a little closer, I would've pushed the bike into the river!

do you know anybody with aa brake down as it covers the person not the car I get it free through my bank ,and just to say my last motor bike was a aerial square four in 1967

when I had it no the bloke I sold it to said he was going to put it on . I did not bother as I did not have the side car. wish I still had it they are worth a fortune now.

Dad had a 1954 four pipe mk2 with a 2 seat super rocket chair, used to feel like Flash Gordon sitting in it. Rode it twice after getting my driving licence, before he sold it to an American who shipped it back to the states in 1964

Thanks Guys I think The AA may be a rout we go down but we are in the field for another 3 weeks. A local farmer who is a friend has a workspace I can use which is extremely clean. But I will need to sort out some tools.

Not sure what is wrong the turbo is Wooshing when I accelerate and but there is no smoke. Could it be as simple as a loose pipe or something?

if it is whooshing then check the air pipe at the bottom no clips or any thing holds it on, you will see it from underneath, that's what was the trouble on my old one and yes I had been into a field where the grass was long I do not know if this had something to do with it or not or just coincidence hope this helps
