Oh right, well whenever i buy a vehicle that needs 'ramming' into gear i often question whether i've been a very silly boy.

It could certainly help. I'd also check out the brake hydraulics (most likely), and finally the clutch if that doesn't fix it.

made a big mistake buying the 1.8 in the first place.
i dont get it, people still buy these k series even after getting all the bad reviews on here
anyway, my old l series did exacly the same, turned out it was the clutch, once changed it sorted the problems.

I'd agree that it sounds like the clutch, the question is how close the biting point is to the floor. The clutch isn't too difficult to replace yourself though it will take a weekend or so. On the plus side, the petrol doesn't have the clutch cylinders inside the bellhousing so you can change it simply.

Check the clutch slave cylinder mounting as this can give problems, otherwise try bleeding the clutch and see if that helps.

Although LZ seems to be the place where I spend most of my time, I suspect that most people only sign up AFTER they've bought a Freelander.
I would also like to point out that although a number of Freelanders do have HG failures and other annoying 'features', they are also cheap and cheerful and when repaired correctly can be as reliable as any other car.

yeah your right mate didnt sign up till after i bought it and freelanders are the same as any other car ive tried bmw and audi's you get problems with any car you buy but rovers are the easiest to work on i had a metro with a 1.8 engine and that was the most reliable car i had!
