tread depth for winter snow

my grabber 235/85/r16 at's are at around 5mm of thread left, they started off at around 11mm i think. When do most people renew or shall i go down to legal limit. How much does it affect snow grip?

Thought it would be quite obvious really.

Fresh snow you need the tread ideallly as deep as possible

Compacted snow and or Ice if there's no grip to be had...........

Grabbers are no good on slippery surfaces as they don't have a large footprint. However, they are good for loose snow, as long as there is not a layer of ice beneath it.

I use road tyres throughout the year and have no problems except on deep, fluffy snow.

Are you any good at ice skating?? Because that is what it would be like with very worn tyre tread

My prediction is this will be the most snow ever, setting new records in most of the UK. With record low temps

So get them block heaters for your diesels and plug them in cheers

You want narrow deep wall tyres for mud and snow. Wider tyres are good for sand and shingle. Just watch all them posh 4x4 looky likeys with their low profile super wide tyres go nowhere with the lightest dusting of the white stuff. Makes me chuckle every year.

Think it really depends on the driver, my missus has a BMW X5 with 275/40/20 front and 315/30/20 rears, and I managed perfectly well in it last year so much so that I was actually quite shocked at just how good it was in the snow. Obviously it was'nt in a defenders league but still very impresive!

Winter tyres are recommended to be changed at 4mm. I run Winters on the Landy and my cars from end October till May. Grip on compacted snow/ice is down to tyre compound and design.

my 36/12.50/16 simex didnt struggle in the snow

come to think of it they didnt struggle in the mud either

Not had any probs with my 265/75/16 special tracks in the snow. My boss was running winter tyres on his monteray and I outperformed him even on ice.

Same predicament for me. Iv got some worn kumho venture mt's on... Think il try and make em last tho!

Yeah, not a drop... Well maybe some over a weekend at Christmas so we can all go and play!

just glad to have my landy here this year as i dont think they believe in road salt here, well not that i see, plus a space saver is not great in the snow
