Thanks guys

I'm pretty sure the hub needs to be freed-up to get enough play to pull the shafts out.
I'm pretty sure that there are no oil seals in the replacement dif.

Not sure about the c-clip thing. I'm thinking I need to get some just in case, and they will probably be something autopart need to order in, usually next day, so I might as well order the seals as well, and while I am at it I may as well get the mounts. Dont want to get it all off then wait a day because one of the mounts is buggered.

what I dont get, is, if the c-clip pops out and pushes back in, what exactly is it doing?

Thanks

Blimey!.... been phoning around to get my hand on oil seals and mounts. Seen OEM on Amazon for around £20 for the set of mounts and £2 per seal, but not sure if I should buy cheap and most would not arrive until the end of next week. Don't want to take the diff off and then have to wait a week for them to turn up so I am trying to source them now. Phoned around supposed Land Rover specialist locally, but all say these bits can only be obtained from LR. Phoned up our local LR dealer....
Oil Seals £32 + VAT each
Side mounts £69.22 each
....I didnt hear the price of the 3rd mount, but got off the floor just in time for him to say total with VAT £266!

So thinking I either go back onto Amazon or wait to see what the condition of the mounts are. I need to find those Essex lads on this site.

Grrrrrr!

I'd have thought any diff bought from a scrappy should come complete with seals. Can't see any reason they would pull them out.

I'll go and have another look in a mo, but do you think they will be ok to reuse? Might have had a stroke of luck though. Found an ebay shop that works out of a farm a mile or two from me. They do Bearmach parts. I've messaged asking if I can pick up if I order online. Seals £9 for the pair, set of mounts £43.

And.... how'd you get your animated gif to work? My avatar is one as well, but doesn't run when you click on it.:(

If you can get them that cheap then do it, if not I'd take the chance.
As for the avatar, I don't know. I just uploaded it and it seems to work. I've had it for years and it still makes me laugh every time I watch it. Pity it doesn't work until you click on it though.

You are right Alibro, the seals are still there. I think it will all depend on what I have managed to get hold of when the the time comes to put the diff in. I'm not going to hang around waiting for an ebay delivery, but if I can get them local then I will. Bit worried about starting with a leak.

Just released the two struts fixed to the frame. The hub pulled back easily enough without releasing the strut that runs along the frame. A little bit relieved and worried at the same time, as both shafts just fell out, so no having to pop them out with a cold chisel. Wonder if that is bad news, or means no C clips... and ordering another part, or worse, damage to the splines on the shafts. Can't see the end of the shafts yet. I need to get underneath to remove the gaiters. (Dont trust getting underneath with axle stands and no wheels on.... so I'm going to fetch some concrete blocks at the top of my field and chock up along the frame). Off to Bournemouth tomorrow to see the granddaughter. Hope to get the diff out and new one nearly in place on Sunday. Worst case, finish off Monday.

Your avatar did make me smile... didn't expect the escaping turd! Mine used to work on another site automatically when the page loaded but the admin put a stop to it for some reason. Mine doesnt work here even when you do click on it.

I'm always nervous going under the car with axle stands too. I usually throw the wheels under the sills as an extra safety net. Might not prevent injury 100% but could save a life.
I've never touched the rear drive shafts but have pulled the fronts out and just shoved them back in.

No one expects the escaping turd!!!

If there's no evidence that the seals were leaking, then don't change them. Just put a smear of grease on the seal lip when refitting the drive shafts. I said previously, If it ain't broken, don't fix it!! ;)
Oh a the C clips are there to hold the joint into the spline, nothing more. They won't come out on there own.

I knew I would cock-up somewhere. I was mistaken when I thought I had pop-out the shafts from the diff when I released the hub members. (and I did have to undo the longitudinal struts to move the hub back enough for the shafts to clear the diff) What I had done is pulled the shaft out of the inner joint. Dont want to remove the gaiter as it has a clip that I bet I'd have to get from LR. Whats inside the gaiter? Is it just a matter of relocating splines inside the gaiter? the workshop manual does not show it unassembled. I did manage to pop out the shafts from the diff with no real problems, but pulling them out is no joke, I had to push the hub away with my foot to get the clearance... so I guess I would have separated the inner joint then anyway. Had to keep one eye on how far I was stretching the brake lines. No handbrake cable to worry about. Not sure why it was not in the same place as in the guide I used.

The good news, the scrap diff is in, so I'm putting the hub stays together now. Broke the red plasticy thing holding the breather in. Just going to put some sealant round it. Got some 80W/90 GL5 gear oil and released the filler before putting the diff back. I think I need to fill it until the oil comes out of the hole.

Any thoughts on the shaft joints would be appreciated.
THanks

pull shaft back again and feel it back into its slots it should look like this if its the inner one if you removed gaiter but you shouldnt need to

Its a lot easier if you know you are going to get good advice. Thanks again guys. I do actually really enjoy it, but its always against the clock and the worry of costs running wild. You lot have saved me I'm sure!

Looking to fit the prop before next winter. Give me time to have it checked out, check out the IRD and save for a set of decent tyres. Get some wear out of the existing tyres as well. So you've not seen the last of me!

Bloomin well hope not, You're now the resident rear diff eggspurt.;)

Aw shucks! Is that like the first line of support for all those noobs like me who need someone to tell them that they have stupidly not paid attention to the handbook, so you dont have to say it over and over? I can do that!:)

A bit like that but you now need to learn how to abuse newbies in the approved Landyzone manner.
At takes a while to pick it up but I'm sure you'll manage. :p
