Hi All,

Rebuilding a 1996 300tdi transfer box and was going ok. Rebuild kit bought from Ashcrofts. Issue is that I pressed on the rear diff carrier bearing (JLM104948) (after heating in oven for 10 mins) and it went on fine (using old inner race to press). Flipped the diff assemble over to access the other end and the bearing fell apart with no outside effect/impact!!!! rollers everywhere!!! is this possible?? collected all the bits and it did go back together and now seems that is wont come apart again - seems odd has anyone ever had that happen to them - is it still serviceable?? Any knowledge appreciated as trying to get back together
Thanks

Not happened to me with a land rover item but has with other farm machine taper bearing. Put it back together , tested it turned smooth and put it back in. Once in place there is no way it can come apart again. May be worth checking the roller cage for any breaks in its frame.

if you pressed in the inner race on with another inner race its not surprising the rollers fell out you need a socket or tube that fits without touching the cage, id buy a new bearing 606474 or frc7871 depending on which end of diff

Thanks as ever for your comment James. I use an inner race with a cut and upside down so it only touches the inner race and not the cage. Do you think if it didn't touch the cage it would still be a problem??

if you dont knock the cage its ok if you do it stretches it and rollers fall out,you can get the odd badly made bearing where that happens at the slightest touch even unwrapping in which case you want another bearing

Thanks for the input - just need to decide if I damaged it (which I am am always careful to avoid the cage ) or it was faulty either way not looking great

Managed to be in contact with Dave Ashcroft (where it was bought from) and he confirmed that they should not come apart and would be better to change it, faulty or not ?? no idea but better to be safe. Thanks for your input
