Land Rover newbie. 1979 Santana. Driving in 2wd. Leaving a stoplight, I hear a large bang from what I thought was the rear diff and lost drive. I pressed the yellow knob down after stopping and no drive whatsoever to either axle. I put it in low ratio and was able to limp it back to work. My thought is the high gear in the transfer box since I’m not getting drive to the front wheels in high.

I didn’t hear anything rattling while in 4 low. I have no choice but to limp it home 13 miles after work.

You should be able to see the shift mechanism from underneath, get someone to wiggle the lever while you look - don't run the engine for safety - you need to be ok to fix the thing ...

Update: 4wd, high ratio works running front wheel drive only I believe. 4wd low ratio works, not sure if front wheels only. 2wd high ratio does not work. 2wd low ratio works at rear wheels.

Update 2: based on the issue, I suspected broken 1/2 shaft. Yep. At least one so changing both.

Likely need diff out to get the broken end out
Yep. Working up the parts list now. These Santana's don't seem to match up with the Series 3's in that my rear axle is not Salisbury. The entire third member is removable from the front of the casing like the front axle. I figure if I'm going this deep, I might as well refurbish the entire thing... new seals, gaskets, etc. It's in need anyway. I just wasn't planning to do it so quickly. I wish I had the money to swap to the 24 spline setup.

Be glad of that, Salisburys are buggers to get done ...
