I bought a Discovery ES v8 1995 as a non starter at the end of december
in fair condition,it had not run for 4 months despite the attempts of 4
mechanic's including the AA .I had it transported home pumped up the tyres ,charged the battery and asked for help on this site, thanks to some
brilliant advice from some realy helpful people had it running two days
later. I sorted a few bits of rust and got bitten by the modifing bug.It
now has a 2in body lift, 2in suspension lift, high angle props, 6 degree
camber correction arms ,5in extended brake lines ,2in longer bump stops,360 degree rear trailing arms ,10 wide wheels with 325 70 x 16 AT tyres,75mm flatdog wheel arch extentions, tubular front bumper ,sump guard ,custom rocksliders ,lifted rear bumper, stainless steel exhaust with 4 branch headers, modified anti roll bars, and a RTC steering damper in front of the axle.Well If I havent sent you all to sleep I need some advice again due to the tyre size its geared little to high for towing . I have a spare transfer box (v8 disco) would it be feasable to change the high ratio to 1.14 ?.I have a manual which explains how to recon the box
but no mention of a ratio change.

Thanks

Sounds like you need a T-box from a Defender: 90 has a ratio of 1:1.4 and the 110 has a ratio of 1:1.6.

110 are 1.1410 too ,its the engine that makes differencs 2.5 na and earlier where 1,667 tdis both 200 and 300 are 1.410 ,you can just change high gear and intermediate and inut if yours is e suffix, and gear swaps do need to be suffix related as there are differences between some gears even though ratio is the same ie dog teeth on high and low ,if you let me know serial no i could tell you which gears where needed to change your spare box plus recon parts ,if you get second hand 1.1410 you need to check input gear splines and feel by rotating both out put flang1es while the t/box in gear on the floor

jamesmartin, do you know if it is possible to change the low range gear ratios?

i want to keep the ratios high to save fuel consumption on the motorway, but want better crawler gears for off road in low range.

ny idea if different gear sets are available?

cheers. (sorry for partial hijack)

not using lr gears as there all the same ratio on lt230s,most use under drives or crawler boxes ,i did years ago fit an after market gear set but did involve removing a fair bit of aluminum out of case as std low gear fits fairly tightly, you could fit different crown wheel and pinion sets and up t/box with 1.006 high ratio ,or auto box

Thanks for the info Jamesmartin :)

Hadn't thought about fitting high ratio high range gearset to compliment low ratio final drives, that would work nicely, and give stronger diffs.

But as you suggested, underdrive is probably the simplest option, and then you get 4 ratios to choose from, but im not sure if super low ratio on the underdrive would be lower than what I'm looking for!

Probably not tbh, would most likely be quite useful.

Really I just need my current first gear low to be like second or third, giving me reasonable 4th and 5th ratios for laning in low range, but also a semi-crawler ratio in 1st for tricky sections.

Underdrive PROBABLY ticks all those boxes. Hmmm!

hi for yours since input is 28 teeth you would need ftc5089 input gear,ieh000120 intermediate gear and high gear ftc1741 those would cost £170 new + vat that would give you 1.1410
