Can anyone tell me for sure what the size is for the "big nyloc nut" that holds the drive flanges on on the transfer box? mines a 96 300tdi, ive done a few searches and found 2 possible answers;
1 says its a 30mm head size (or spanner/socket size)
2 the other says its a 30mm (and thats it no other description)

Can anyone say for definite? Ive already replaced the front bearing/seal and wanted to make a custom slide hammer to make the rear a little easier to replace..........
Thanks in advance ;)

So - yu are asking if its 30mm or 30mm? :confused:

Yeh just read how ive written it, what i meant was is it a 30mm size head/spanner size or 30mm thread size ( i knew what i meant when writing it!!!:lol: )

m20 isnt it , why slide hammer, just tap other end through

The reason is i did the front a while ago, and couldn`t remember what size socket id used, and at the time never thought to take a measurement of thread size etc...
The rear dosnt need doing just yet but its on my "to do list" and just wanted to try and get a little organised beforehand :) so as such ill only be taking the rear prop off when the time comes

ok i see what you mean i was thinking of intermediate shaft ,though nuts the same size , i m=normally just take speedo housing off , though you could just remove nyloc and weld a nut to slide hammer

as yu have to replace the nyloc - use that one.

well i am guilty of not replacing the nut with a new un :eek: but i did used to work for a fastener company so getting hold of 3-4 new nylocs and a standard nut for the slide hammer aint a problem, just wanted to know the size which now i know is a 30mm head, just got to get the thread size, suppose i could go to dealers, but can get the nuts for nothing otherwise,

just what you all wanted at this time on a saturday night eh? someone who cant explain summat properly thats knackered from laying under the landy all day!! :lol:

i never have replaced nuts with new ones unless obviously buggered but seldom are,reusing those nylocs has never been an issue ,certainly in the 90s lrs recon boxes all had reused nuts

Always throw away Nyloc nuts that can be finger tightened all the way down to the washer. If the nylon section grips the bolt thread and cannot be tightened without a spanner, then it is ok to reuse.
