Hi Folks. After years of wanting a landrover I've finally taken the plunge and bought a 2000 Discovery2 TD5 GS! She has 116K miles on the clock and a part service history.

I thought I would give it a service, so I have a baseline to work from. Yesterday I changed the oil and filters, airfilter and fuel filter. Hope to get the gearbox/transfer box/dif oils changed over the next few days. Have also ordered an EGR blanking plate.

Any other maintenance items I should be considering at this mileage?

I notice the back door is stiff to open and plan to look at the hinges and damper tomorrow. Is this a common problem?

Once I get the blanking plate fitted I was planning on using a fuel additive/cleaner such as Reddex before measureing the mpg. Has anyone anyone experience of using such products / recommendations?

Cheers.

my back door is stiff too, but i prefer it so it doesnt blow in the wind.

Mine is ERG too, seems to work ok. I havent used any additives but plan too when i go on a big trip, there was a thread a while back that said it made a bit difference.

As for MPG, i get around 27 average at the moment, dont expect much more even after the additive. Mine is an auto though.

Tips for first time disco owner:

Find a mate close by who has a disco cuz sooner or later your gonna need help with the big hunk of junk.

Treat her well service her regularly, keep on top of the corrosion, and you'll be fine.

Ive owned mine from new, 2002, now on 138k miles. Approx. 31-34 mpg.

Other running costs are cheap, tyres 70k+ miles from BFG AT's, parts costs are cheap.

On TD5's we have previously sold at around the 100k mark we nearly always have to replace the rubber intercooler hoses top and bottom because they perish.

My tip is to get out there and have fun using your Discovery. Like yourself I have wanted a Land Rover for years and it was only very recently that the chance to get one came about.

The backdoor is stiff, but like robpenrose said I prefer it that way and as battenberg says cruise control makes life easier on those long journeys. I think (although I may be mistaken) that the wiring is already there and you just need to fit the switches.

Find out where there is a local club and go and do some off roading and greenlaning (Don't let Grippa hear you call them the same thing. Green lanes ARE roads, just unsurfaced!) I can tell you this. You will have such fun you will smile for a week and won't be able to wait to do more.

just looked at this kit for my V8 and was a little surprised to see a fuel filter in the list.. I have never changed a fuel filter on a petrol motor and in fact have never seen a fuel filter on a petrol motor other than the debris trap in the tank.. has the LR got one?

Yes

On my old V8 110 it was under the driverside front wheel arch. I think it is at the front drivers side of the engine bay on a disco. Hopefully someone can confirm the location for you. If you don't have LPG they need changing frequently. Having LPG you shouldn't need to change it as often. Lack of get up and go when on petrol is often experienced when they are blocking up.

cool thanks guys.. will order the kit and go oil shoppi9ng .. .service in time for Salisbury with any luck.. if I waster test my ht leads and don't get sparklies do they need changing.. also how regularly should the spark plugs be changed? I heard it was more regular with LPG

if it is fuel injected it will definatly have one usually placed on chassis rails by gearbox depends on what truck

to change gear and diff oils. once i removed the old i use a hand spreyer (like from the garden center's) to fill them back up.
Just fit the hose only to the spreyer and place in the fill hole and presureise the vessle (note 80w90 gear oil is thick and will thake a while to fill the transfer box), once full pull the small depressureiseing button jobs a good un, note hang the pipe up in the air after use ans the oil is evel to get out of pavements and clothes.

I prefer the pressurised sprayer method but if ya int got one a 2 litre lemonade bottle with the cap adapted to take a tube (oneshot grease cap works) then fill with oil and squeeze bottle. and it does a pretty good job as well. Think there's a post in one of Busters helpful guides that shows ya how it's done.
