Timing belt and auxiliary belt change

Hi everyone. I've been quoted about £400 to replace the above and was wondering whether it would be best to change them myself?

Can you tell me the pros and cons of both please?

300tdi ?yes its cheaper,crank bolt needs a very good air or battery gun or a special tool which can be made but needs a welder and some ability

Yes a 300tdi. I am mechanically minded as I'm a plumber/gas engineer/fitter but haven't really dealt with cars much, if I read up and took my time would you reckon it would be worth me doing it or just getting a garage to do it?

yes as long as you can undo crank bolt ,read up on that
 
Go to the home screen, tells you how to do it in words and pictures with all the settings. Third one down after air problems (fit springs), childrens seats (use condoms always) and then belt change.
 
As has been said, the nut that hold, the pulley on the end of the crank can be a right PITA to get off. I tried to improvise a pulley holding tool and failed.
You'll need a few tools, torque wrench/es, viscous fan spanner, angle torque gauge, timing pin kit is useful.
The aux belt is very straightforward.

I've decided to bottle it and get it done by the pros. It's been on the drive for 3 weeks because I didn't want to risk driving it as the timing belt was long overdue. It's getting done tomorrow.

Its too late now, but I would have said that the job is easy if you buy the tools. Its possible ish without them, if you're good at bodging together stuff, but with the specific tools its really not a tough job.

If you bought the tools, absolutely everything, you would probably have over half your 400 left over, even including the belts idler, etc etc.

If you just have one 300tdi, possibly you could say that you won't need it done again for so long, but, certainly if you (anyone) has more than one, its well worth getting the kit.
