Stopped at Tescos to get some dinner, and lo and behold..

Darn thing would not start. All I was getting was a click from the solenoid.....:p Damn you , you beautiful beast...

In the middle of the carpark bonnet up, darn it those exhaust manifolds are hot..... gave all the wires a wiggle, still no good, just deciding to get the tools out and start pulling it apart, when I give it one last hail mary pass...........She started...!!:D

I guess tomorrows job is already sorted.

On investigation may find it is time for a replacement unit.

Cheers

Start testing at the ignition switch ... mine went fubar with the same issue .. Starter and solenoid were fine.

If it's a TD5 it probably just needs the solenoid overhauled. Kits to do this are about £15.

the fendes is a 300tdi, not the same problem , but thanks

New one arent that dear, BUT the britparts ones arent a patch compared to say a bosch unit on the inside.
Think you will find the 200 and 300 are the same unit and they fit the entire diesel range right back to the late 1950s 2 litre diesel.

Started on the button this morning.

Looked at the starter , undid all the connections, cleaned them up. Refitted, first turn of the key....Nothing. Second turn , started.

So took the starter off, pulled it apart, full of a lot of black gunk and graphite, had even made some 5mm diameter ball bearing looking things inside itself, which brake apart when squeezed.

Original bosch unit, looks like it is well used inside. Will clean it up and keep it for emergencies with the spare alternator. Ordered another to put in.

Cheers
