So, for a good while now my 110 fitted with a discovery 200tdi has suffered from starting issues. I jump in, turn the key, to be greeted by a click.

Flat battery? Nope.

Ok, jump out, bridge the terminals on the solenoid, and it UsUALLY starts ( sometimes you just hear the starter spinning but without locating in the fly wheel). Pretty much always starts using this method, but I don't really want to have to lift the bonnet every time I want to start it.

I have just finished changing the head gasket today, and while the head and manifolds were out, I removed the starter and bench tested it. Perfect. Time after time, it worked brilliantly.

It has it's own earth lead, and when I turn the key, there is always a steady 12v to the solenoid. Any ideas? It's driving me round the bend now!!

Cheers

Check the earths, particularly the one to the engine. The gearbox main earth was fine but mine was playing up and would do just that, click but nothing else , turned out to be the engine earth loose.

Engine earth connection on mine is just below the alternator to nearside chassis rail.

Well well, after a lot of prodding, poking, swearing and drinking, I found the solution to my problem!!

There is a relay that sits behind the fuse box on the lower bulkhead. This relay is part of the ignition system, and yes, it was on its way out.

I swapped it for an identical relay that was behind the fuse box (think it might have been wash/wipe relay) and it started every time.

Trip to local supplier, £2.70 later and it is all fixed. Cracking. Also, the part number was ywb10032L if anyone else has the same issue.

Cheers! I figure someone might stumble across this post and now they can see the resolution. Nothing worse than searching, seeing that someone got loads of helpful advice, but then never followed up and said whether it was sorted or not!
