I noticed when I slowly emerge from a 90 degree junction, one of the rear wheel seem to instantly spin or jump, just an instant sensation of scrubbing.

Same sensation and feel when slowly reversing into a parking bay, I can feel the rear wheels 'jumping'.

I only get this going forward or reverse with near full-lock.

Is this a sign of VCU needing replaced?

130,000 miles TD4.

Do the vcu check, but sounds similar to mine.
You can remove the propshafts and the vcu and continue using your hippo.
Either check it or remove it because if it is that, you will blow your IRD or rear diff and triple the size of the repair bil

Yeh, before you remove props do the 1 wheel up test to see what times you get.

Wheel scuffing on loose surfaces (eg gravel) can be expected, but not on high traction surfaces (eg tarmac).

Actually GG, a correctly working VCU shouldn't pass enough torque to skip the wheels on loose surfaces unless you apply some power. Under a rolling situation, the wheels should not skip. This is what makes the Freelander so good on very low traction surfaces like snow. The wheels all roll over the surface maintaining control. The tyres only break traction when applying to much power or braking to hard.

If you're making a tight turn on an uneven gravel surface (eg on a potholed drive such as mine!), there's a decent chance of scuffing. In fact its an ever increasing likelyhood because the wheel scuffs in the same place each time digging the pothole out further.
