thin or wide tyres?

hi, i had 235/70/R16 tyres which were fairly worn down and i just bought and swopped them for 205/80/R16 tyres with loads of tread. before and after where M and S tyres. have i made a mistake?

sorry i didnt make myself clear. its my only car so i use it on tarmac alot bu also go off roading every so often, nothing to serious but can be muddy
 
FFS why do we all assume that we know better - LR have sent the last 60yrs and god knows how much cash researching all types of terrain and driving, why is it that we all assume that we NEED to make massive mods to our cars to go down some lanes - which are supposed to be classed legally the f'ing same as the M6.

Not a rant but a valid point I stayed with the tyres my RR had fitted and have done the same with the disco.
If somewhere along a green lane I think there would be a problem I reverse or turn around and go back, unless I can bypass without doing any damage to the lane.
