And I bet you a pound to a penny your hard days work hasn't fixed it :D

I'd like to take you up on that bet. hehe After about 10 seconds of
worry that that new switch was too big and wouldn't go in on the first attempt, a little persistence and another 10 seconds later is slotted in perfectly. :)

I switched on the engine and hey presto.. Both the TC and HDC lights went out. I jumped in and took it round the block to test it using the brakes as... (light braking caused the lights to illuminate in the first place) but again hey presto... no lights came on. :)

I then got the missus out to check the brake lights. They were only working intermittently before the switch change. Again, brake lights working perfectly!!

Therefore the change of the brake light switch sorted my TC and HDC problem as Chaser described. :D Special thanks to him and his original post before he got a little cry baby huffyy. :D:D:D

well if ABS,Tc and HDC lights are all on it is not such an easy fix as a brake light switch, after as many computers diagnosing faulty ABS sensors and putting them on at 200 quid a pop-the 3 Amigos are still on,i don't know who designed these cars but they weren't very clever.

Here's my definitive guide, snaffled from elsewhere as my camera is gash:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Whilst driving to work on Friday, I noticed the Hill Descent Control & Traction Control warning lamps illuminated:

Also realised later in the evening that my brake lights weren’t working either! Much reading on Landyzone lead me to believe that the brake light switched was stuffed.

After googling Landrover Freelander parts I found I needed the following : -

Switch (XKB500120):

Convertor Harness (YMQ503280):

Here’s a picture of the switch with the convertor loom (Harness) attached:

Procedure to replace:

The old switch can be seen to the left of the throttle pot in this picture.

It was then just a matter of removing the old switch by twisting it and then withdrawing it from its retaining bracket.

The new switch was then installed by inserting it into the retaining bracket and twisting. The loom was connected up and the ignition turned on. The HDC & TC lights then extinguished after the bulb check.

OLD SWITCH :

NEW SWITCH :

Compare the new switch to the old one! They are substantially different in shape and size.

The new switch also seems more robust than the older one!

Ye could always stick this bit in the 'Common Faults and Questions' section ;)

Yep. Brake lights are working perfectly and no more warning lights. The old switch that I removed is safely in the bin as it was poop'd.

many thanks for detailed info (i've just received new switch & cable to replace a faulty original switch) - out of interest, can anyone explain why the warning lights come on when the switch is faulty? Is there another sensor somewhere which detects brake movement along with the operation of the switch....?

I dunno mate? Maybe the brake switch gets dirty or pitted over time and does not make a good electrical contact. Throwing up error codes/lights. There is another sensor there, I belive its a Hall effect switch, I have no idea what its for though, may work in tandem with the brake light switch, or may measure how fast and hard the brake pedal was depressed.

I have the same problem that you had peco, the 2 Amigos come on only with braking, and only sometimes, as soon as I set off they disappear, not checked the brake lights as yet.

I did however remove the brake switch today and took it apart. Seemed ok to me, metered it out with my fluke and no problems, so I sprayed some electrical contact cleaner/lube, in there and put it all back together.

Well...............The 2 Bastards still appear every now and then while braking, so I may be going down the new switch route. Is the new part from the discovery? They still sell the old switch.

Is it just a better made switch?

I had the 3 amigos untill I changed a leaking brake cylinder. Its not happened since.Well worth opening the drums even just to check the condition of the insides.

Yeah! I did that today, you mentioned it in another post of mine, every thing seemed ok in there, even the shoes looked new.

I could have an intermittant brake switch problem, as it comes and goes, only with braking though.
