Hi i've searched for some tips for removing the tensioner bearing circlip and found 100's of threads about the penny trick but none about how to get the circlip out!

Anyone know how to do it???

Got a new bearing ready to fit - can't get the bloody circlip out!!
 
You can't use circlip pliers as there aren't any locating holes!

I have finally managed to remove the circlip in 1 piece:

Dremeled a groove in the tensioner wheel so i could push the circlip out from the other side :) - sorted!!!
 
Here is the tensioner with a new bearing and the circlip removed, you can see where i have dremeled the groove to allow me to push the circlip out from the back :D

Hi Daz ...... reckon our TD5 engines must have gone down the production line together....!

Mine sounds like a loose aux belt - squealing as if cold/loose on a cold wet morning, but you'd expect it to stop doing that after a few miles/warm up. But it keeps on squealing..... is that the symptoms you had for the failed tensioner bearing?

Doesn't help that I've got a chirpy chirpy prop uj (I'm pretty certain....after eliminating bearings and finding failed steering pins, and doing the caliper pistons I'd been putting off for months....) so have to try to hear the different chirps and squeals seperately to work out what's going on....! UJ for sure later/tomorrow - really looking forward to getting the prop off in this temperature...!

Tensioner sound effects would be handy second opinion. Cheers, A

Mine is a 300tdi - but the squeaking is high pitched and does increase with rpm. Open your bonnet and if its the tensioner you will hear it! Not sure about TD5 engines and their tensioners but the bearing change on mine was easy enough after i used the dremel :D

prop ujs should be done asap not left

Good advice JM - I've been doing a few unavoidable local slow trips, but have a mental image of a prop dropping on the move....... and that vibration transmitting each way to the transfer box and diff oil seals/gears...... Looks like a frozen bum tomorrow....... Appreciate it. Ta A
 
Yep as james says prop uj's need to be done asap!
You will only hear the squeaking from them when the 90 is moving too ;)

Cheers Daz - the uj diagnosis I am fairly confident on. chirpy chirpy - bit of a clonk changing from forward to reverse, increases under power, decreases on overrun or with clutch dipped..... and about 4x frequency of wheel rotation....... I'll get the prop off anyway - can always use it in rear wheel drive and double check its quiet, but will do the uj's anyway fo the sake of £30 or so.

Tensioner sound effects seem consistent with your and other experiences - will stick my head under the bonnet while warming up from the prop shaft removal in the morning......:D

As you've already cut a groove I guess you've got it out now. The only way I managed it, was to hold one end with a screwdriver then with your spare 2 other hands you can hit the other end with another screwdriver and hammer. It will just about pop the end out of the groove and then you lever it round and it flies across the garage.
You can buy replacement bearings that come with a normal circlip. LR obviously never expected theirs to wear out!
 
Hurrah! 3 totally dried out and knackered cups on the front prop rear UJ - just as well it wasn't on the road for much longer ...... Did the front UJ as well - nice smooth ride now, reckon its had a bit of a rumble for quite some time, and very glad to see the end of the chirping....

Rear prop seems ok - I have the uj's ready for when I have the time and energy.

Well, apart from the tensioner squeek of course - next on the list! I see its the season for it...... Cheers, A
 
just done the tensioner bearing on mine. used a small chisel n the edge of the circlip to put a kink in it. Then a screwdriver to prise one end forwards & a feeler gauge slipped behind it to stop it from springing back into the grove.

Still squealed like fook until I fitted the noo belt. :)
