When I dissembled my old slave cylinder there was no circlip behind the seal. There is no recess in the wall of the cylinder that I have seen on master cylinders for circlips.

My cylinder seal kit included the seals and also a (mostly) C-shaped circlip.

I had a go at inserting the circlip. Despite my best endeavours and picking a large free area, the circlip wasn’t keen on going in and finally disappeared for good – I think it is hiding somewhere on my pea-shingle drive, where it is well camouflaged.

Questions:
  1. Do I need a circlip or is it ok without?
  2. If I do need a circlip, could I make do with a “normal” circlip where I can use circlip pliers.
  3. Or do I need to obtain another C-shaped circlip (s) and how on earth are you supposed to get this in place?

I can’t see a circlip in the workshop manual nor in this video

On my two old slave cylinder housings cant see any groove inside either so I would guess you don’t need it or if you can see where it goes a similar one that does same job would suffice
I did same in back garden with one of those stainless caliper clips what brake pads slide in seen it fly off somewhere and used one of those triangular welding magnets on some string to dredge the area then found it in my case
