td5 wont drive forward only reverse

hi my discovery td5 automatic 1999 will only drive in reverse and has no forward gears.. all thats happening is the green m+s cog light flashes on dashboard.. dont know why i just pulled over for a moment and put it in park then selected drive and nothing just green light flashing ..is the gearbox broke or not perhaps ..

Very often on this series of auto-boxes the problems lies with the gearbox switch, located on the nearside of the gearbox.

The problem can be one of alignment of or a faulty switch.

First thing I would do is:

1. Charge the main car battery for a full 12 hrs;

2. check the switch wiring and plug connectors - clean with switch cleaner and pull/push a few times to ensure good contact.

also drain a little oil out ,blackish ,burnt smell ,clutch pack A probably
