What is it with Land Rover designers? Why when they made such a mess of the TDi (according to the funniest comment I've ever read on the forum) did they compound it when they sketched the Series 2 with TD5 engine?

Just how do you get to the top nut? I've tried all my socket extensions / universal joints etc all to no avail - looks like a lump out job - just for a dodgy starter solenoid contact replacement.

Any ideas anyone.

why not change the starter contacts in situ? If the motor is that difficult to get out it has to be easier to do em where it is.
 
could be worse.. had the head off my alfa the other day which required a 25 inch extension on a socket to reach up through the 3 inch gap between the sump and the suspension bracket to undo two nuts that hold an engine strap on the underside of the intake manifold.. the intake manifold is held to the head by 10 bolts, 4 of which are only accessible once the head is off..
 
I did mine by lying on my back with my feet towards the front of the car and reaching up and over the top of the starter motor. I had an extension bar on the socket and I could just about get some purchase with the ratchet.

The extension bar was in effect parallel to the body of the starter.

It's well fiddly but keep trying. If I can manage it anyone can.

Thanks Andy, I'll have another go as you suggest. Sounds like I need to enrol someone with horrendous deformaties as my Land Rover specialist repairer!!
