So ive got a discovery 2 TD5 ES was running fine untill we had some bad rain i went through a puddle was no deeper than about 5 inches and it cut out so opened up the air box to find it full of water so i removed it dried it out and took of the pipes and dried them put it back together and after a few turns of the key it started was running but very smokey after about 5 mins the smoke cleared up an it drove fine not a problem for 2 days until i run low on fuel so i fuelled up at morrisons station and since ive refuelled it is smoke smells like unburnt fuel but the smoke comes and goes can go a day with out smoke then can cone back it seems to have a slight misfire at around 1500RPM but not noticeable at idle and seems to go away after 1500RPM ive been told by a garage that ive bent a conrod with the water i know that this is the most likely cause but cant understand why the snoke comes and goes could this be down to bad supermarket fuel as ive heard alot of people complaining about it any help would be much appreciated only put replaced the engine in this 9 months ago and dont plan on doing it agen

Could be bent rod, I know you only have 4 glow plugs so cant check all 5 cylinders, but I would say remove them and see if all 4 pistons reach the same tdc height.

Drop the oil, if its a water oil mix high chance is you've bent a rod, compression test would prove which one is mullered
You can of course fix anything, but the cost is always going to vary as they will find other stuff that is broken/worn whilst they are in there.
I would say the 2nd hand engine is the cheapest route and the quickest.
In that case then ill be selling it not spending out for a new engine again its a shame as its a very clean car for its age been well looked after with every optional extra leather heated seat still pretty much original aswell the chassis is solid on it not 1 spot of rust
Has anyone plugged it in? The water could have upset some wiring or got into a connector giving an intermittent fault. Agree with the above however if it is unburnt diesel coming out the exhaust then a con rod does seem likely. Has you injector loom been checked or changed lately?

It is deffinately unburnt fuel and the water i went through was on a country lane it was covering the road both sides but it wasnt higher than the kerbs it was more annoying that i had broke down at the side of the road an there was small cars like fiesta’s driving through the same puddle not a problem
The problem I always found with D1 and D2 was any standing water at slightly to fast a pace caused the car to aquaplane and also push the water forwards and over the bonnet all over the screen.
I have had wet air filters in the D1 but not the D2.

I'm having difficulty believing that you can introduce enough water into a D2 TD5 cylinder to bend a rod in only 5" of water. 25" quite possibly, but not 5" surely. I also don't see how it drove fine for two days if it had a bent rod. I would check the injector seals first.
Is there any low down "big end" knocking? I imagine that bending a rod would also damage the crankshaft and lead to rapid bearing shell wear.

Does the td5 have diagnostics? If your oil is fine and air filter clear/dry see if it has any codes? Check plugs on ecu’s and injectors for water contamination
The water didnt even cover the kerb thats whats more annoying , an theres no nocks or bangs im still using it as my daily runner its just abit smokey now an then and has a misfire at around 1500 RPM it starts first turn of the key and drives fine still has all its power and stays at normal temp ive done over 200 miles since i went through the water and its still going fine
