Hi ,My 2001 Discovery has just developed a wurring noise when the power steering is turned ,even when very little turn is indiced a wurring noise occures.I haven't noticed any loss of power or the neded to turn the steering harder.
Any ideas is it the belt, pump or steering box ?
How big a job and how much.

Thanks
Nigel

Hi,Already checked fluid and belts ,they are okay.

Ordered new pump from Westwood wheels £87 +VAT.
Is replacing this straight forward or is it better left to the garage

Thanks for your reply.

Hi cipx2,
Thanks for the diagram, fingers crossed the pump turns up in a day or two.Looks straight forward enough to do.
Many Thanks
Nigel:)

I would be interested to know how you get on with this one. Mine has been making what seems like the same noise for months and i wondered the same. Sometimes it does it even when the engine is idling and the steering wheel isn't touched. I planned to replace the pump, but i've spent so much time out of the country this year i just havn't managed to get round to it yet. Also could you post a link for where you ordrerd your pump please? Keep us informed!

Quite often its the ACE pump making the noise, but 'we' "assume" its the power steering pump as when you turn the steering it "loads" the engine, hence the noise occurs.

Its quite common for the ACE to whine.

power steering pumps are pretty common to go on TD5's. They drive the waterpump too so are under more strain than most.

I've just had to change mine after it went. I replaced it with an all makes one at £160.

Before changing any pumps, I would always advise: check your front tyre pressures; low pressure exerts more strain on the pas system which makes it groan.

Interesting point Urban Panzer!

When I turn left only, I get a 'fluttering' noise comming from the near side front of the car. It definitely isn't a groan and it doesn't do it when the car is turning right or when the car is stationary and I turn the steering wheel.

Could this be something to do with the ACE pump? Would the ACE whine on left AND right turns?

Hi all, I came across this thread when looking for ideas as to what causing whining noise in my td5 at idle/low revs. Did anyone have any success clearing noise by changing pump? Im considering changing pump but was hoping for some success stories first.

Interested in the result on this also as I have what seems to be the same symptoms in my 2000 Disco 2 TD5.

I know this is not quite the same, but a couple of weeks ago I replaced the pas pump on my wife's TDi - which was a groaner - and now feels like a new car again. No noises, beautiful light steering, just an excellent result.

Cheers for that I need to sort it out so might aswell bite the bullet and buy a PAS pump.

The other point, if I may, is that air can get into the system from slow leaks on the pipes on the power steering `bar' - may be worth trying a bleed of the system first.

I can echo big lads comments ^^^^^^^. I changed mine just over a year ago. It'd be whining for 18 months.:)

Hi folks. I have the groaning steering blues also. Bled the system today with no improvement. I'll try the tyre pressures tomorrow and see. I've the vibration through the steering wheel too. Where's the best place to get the PAS pump? I'm in R.O.I (Rip off Ireland)
Got rid of my old 130 300tdi and am very happy with the 110 td5
