TD5 Power Steering Noise

Hi folks. I have the groaning steering blues also. Bled the system today with no improvement. I'll try the tyre pressures tomorrow and see. I've the vibration through the steering wheel too. Where's the best place to get the PAS pump? I'm in R.O.I (Rip off Ireland)
Got rid of my old 130 300tdi and am very happy with the 110 td5

Dan

I bought mine from my local landy indy.

Hi, my 2001 Disco developed a steering fluid leak, I changed the steering box believing it was the bottom seal (Engineering Hydraulics Bilston £145 + VAT and excellent service). The steering is much more positive but sadly still have a leak and the noise as you describe has started. Did yours leak when the noise started?? Anyone any suggestions as to whether to go straight to replacement pump or could hoses be the problem?

Cheers

I agree with Urban Panzer, i have the same noise coming from my 2001 TD5, its been doing it for a year now, a wurring noise, particularly noticeable on left hand turns at low speeds. I can also hear a drone at idle revs but this can only be heard when sitting in car. When running engine briefly with auxiliary belt removed noise is gone. I replaced ACE pump with new and it made no difference so next i put old pump back but deliberately didnt prime it with fluid on re-assembly. I drove the car and it was fine and quiet, power steering perfect then the noise returned after approx 1 mile....when the old ACE pump had primed itself. Fitted new pump again, replaced valve block filter and lived with it since, ACE working fine. The noise only appeared in mine after replacement of all ACE pipes so i suspect either a pipe touching chassis somewhere or crap got into system during pipe renewal and is affecting valve block. Consider doing a few more checks before you fit PAS pump and cant send it back. Hope this helps.

Hi everyone im having problems with my discovery td5. In the last few days its been making a wurring noise at low revs and making a noise when turning the steering wheel and feels heavy. Ive checked the steering fluid and its a bit low. Im going to top up, and see what happens is there any thing else that i need to do when toping it up? or is it just a matter of poring in the fluid. any advice would be very welcome.

1. Top-up the fluid in the pas reservoir - use atf Dexron IID or III

2. Check front tyre pressures - imho they should be 32psi

3. Check for leaks in the pas hydraulic circuit - can you see any red fluid dripping?

I’ve checked the tyre pressures and there fine. I went to buy the fluid but was unsure which one to buy, and the shop told me they didn’t know which one the car requires either. Is it defiantly the atf dexon IID or III that i should use ive seen some people say to use Vavolines synthetic?

If you want to use the LR recommended fluid, it is available from LR dealers and called ACE and pas low temp fluid and costs about £15 per ltr - but it's just a hydraulic fluid the same as atf.

i have topped up my steering fluid and it seems to have done the trick. :) The noise seems to have gone many thanks for the helpfull information!! I have tho found another problem. I have found some coolant fluid under the radiator top hose pipe. i have had the car pressure tested and it doesnt show any leaks, any ideas???? i do have a photo but im having problems uploading it.

Hi bully, I had a big leak from a very small hole in the metal u portion of the low pressure feed to power steering pump from the reservoir. The metal had rubbed or been vibrating against the sump and worn it through. The part was available ex UK at 155 $NZ. I tracked down a second hand one for 30 which has solved it. Just pop your head underneath and check that the little pipe is not worn. Mine was lonely small but that Dexron iii just poured out.

I have the same prob. and have found a leak. Anyone know if i can buy the low pressure adaptor own it's own or have i gotta buy the complete pump

I had the same problem on a TD4 Freelander. I did about 90 miles in it, and whilst I was turning around trafalgar roundabout the car was making a groaning noise. It didnt do it in a straight line on the way home, and there was no feedback, just sounded like a rubbery groaning noise . I used the car the next day and it didnt make any noises at all, but it was only about 10 miles and back. I have just noticed that the steering fluid was slightly below the low mark, so have topped it up. Im hoping it solves the problem.
Just wondering also, how hot do the TD4 engines get, as mine was really hot after the trip to London i mentioned earlier.
