TD5 engine any good

Brilliant BMW based engine, only couple of known problems. First, the oil pump disconnecting itself from its mount and subsequently losing oil pressure.
Other problem are the electrics, basically the ECU that controls everything electrical. The mechanics apart from the regular servicing items are not DIY friendly. You need to hook the car up to a laptop for troubleshooting.

It's a rover design engine bud, they had nearly finished designing it when BMW bought them out. What about the dual mass flywheel any dramas?

While it is running it is an averagely good engine, but no better that a 200 tdi or 300 tdi, and as those are so much more simple and conventional, that means overall the TD5 is NOT "better" from the average Landy Owner's point of view.

TD5 engines are deliberately GUTLESS at low revs and taking away from rest, so much the so that the owner's manual actually says when towing a trailer you should start off in LOW RANGE, then double-de-clutch into high range ON THE MOVE. You can just see that being a big success on a busy roundabout.

They are not all bad,I fitted a SLABS ECU to a TD5 commercial disco yesterday. It has 204,000 miles on the clock, one driver from new, towing 3.5 tonnes all the time,(Bobcat on Ifor trailer) and he says it has not had anything done to it - at all.Not even a clutch, but the spigot bearing is starting to squeal now,and the SLS has been a pain in the last year.
Point I'm making is that they are capable of alot of hard work and not all of them go wrong, trouble is most people only say bad things - not many say anything good.I have loads of TD5 customers who are totally chuffed with them.I just think its a shame that LR never fitted Defenders with an autobox against the TD5 - which is where it works best.

Sounds bloody typical of a rover designed engine doesn't it charlesy, not fit for purpose! Dont fancy doing heavy towing with anything fitted with a dual mass flywheel, 300tdi for me then. On the 300tdi do you know if the timing belt repair kit works well?

I have a Def TD5 with 309,000 km on the clock, given me a bit of crap along the way, but would not swop it for anything. We been places most people would not walk, and she always got me there and back. They tend to be a bit tempramental but u just gotta drive them with care and work the engine within its limits. Only thing i changed in 300,000 km is the injector harness, oil cooler, starter motor and removed the EGR valve. I would say, on the whole, pretty reliable if looked after.

Well, fair's fair .....
Yesterday Discomania drove the Disco TD5 (no EGR) from here to Birkenhead towing a four wheel trailer that weighs a ton, 250 miles, then towed it back here carrying a new Def rolling chassis on wheels/tyres and a heap of spares, about a 500 mile round trip. It was driven on cruise almost all the way at truck speed in Lane One say 55 - 56 mph, and it gave us about 31 - 31 miles per gallon.

It can't be all bad at that huh?

Once the revs are up over about 1,600 or so she pulls well, and cruising about 2,200 rpm seems to suit my one very happily.

Long may it continue!
