Brilliant BMW based engine, only couple of known problems. First, the oil pump disconnecting itself from its mount and subsequently losing oil pressure.
Other problem are the electrics, basically the ECU that controls everything electrical. The mechanics apart from the regular servicing items are not DIY friendly. You need to hook the car up to a laptop for troubleshooting.
While it is running it is an averagely good engine, but no better that a 200 tdi or 300 tdi, and as those are so much more simple and conventional, that means overall the TD5 is NOT "better" from the average Landy Owner's point of view.
TD5 engines are deliberately GUTLESS at low revs and taking away from rest, so much the so that the owner's manual actually says when towing a trailer you should start off in LOW RANGE, then double-de-clutch into high range ON THE MOVE. You can just see that being a big success on a busy roundabout.

Is the TD5 engine any good?
October edition of Land Rover World has compared 300Tdi, TD5 and the 07 Transit engines..........try picking the bones out of the report.
