td5 disco over heating

i have a discovery td5 i have changed the thermostat , water pump had the radiator flowed and tested there in no over pressuring in the coolant, not hydro locking or water in the oil but is still over heating on the motor way i got so fed up with it i took the thermostat out and its still over heating and its not loosing water ??

Bad sender. TD5 temp gauge does not work like a normal one as it is the ECU that tells the gauge what to read. There is no direct connection between sender and gauge so shorting it to the block has no effect.

another thing to check is when the engine is hot see if the viscous fan is sticky or not, cos that's how it must be ...u must not be able to spin it easy when the engine is hot cos then the viscous unit must be in "blocked" condition...if it spins freely or very easy then it means it doesnt pick up the engine's rotation well to cool the radiator... and you need a new one...it's not uncommon that the internals of the viscous unit to get tired in time(bimetalic valve, drive plate) and the fan will just "freewheel", which is not enough to cool the engine

the fan has broke but have botched it atm because this was happening as i was driving to germnay so the fan dosent spin freely any more if as if you can say is solid to the pully that it is mounted to ( like always engaged ) and its still over heating

I have just had all the above problems did a you have done ended up the Head Gasket was blowing and presuring the cooling system

how did you take the thermostat out? What did you do about the thermostat bypass valve?

Have you confirmed she is actually getting hot, and that the guage isn't telling fibs?
If not buy a temperature gun and confirm it.

If she is hot....before worrying about head gasket are there any signs that any 'radweld' or other type of quick fix ****e has been put in her in the past?

If so, bypass the heater matrix and see if she still does it. There is a chance your matrix may be slowing the flow.

I too am curious exactly how you have removed the thermostat.....

Oh, I ran a TD5 for a year without the fan, the new owner has been running for past two years without the viscous fan (and no leccy one fitted).
Unless towing, or thrashing it _ its fine

The radiator is probably filled up with dry mud. Remove the intercooler and clen the rad. Did this several times when my td5 started overheating ...

Well .. you never know

If my radiator is not clean I will definitely face a rise in the coolant temperature - especially under load. It may become very hot actually (95+ dgr)...
