Morning guys. My Freelander 1 bottom radiator hose is not getting hot after changing the Water pump, thermostat housing with thermostat, all radiator hoses and replacing the cylinder head gasket.
The radiator has been pressure tested and flushed and my temperature guage is sitting just below half.
The over flow expansion tank is filling up above max mark..
I can't think of what it could be.
Any suggestions?

Could still have a air in the system. How did you fill up the radiator. What was the colour of fluid when you empty the system and was there any residue bits.
Don't forget td4 take while to warm up through the radiator.
Ok, thank you, i haven't bled the system', I just filled up through the expansion bottle, do you have the bleeding procedure on hand.

Normally you shouldn't fill from the expansion tank as by itself is to allow the heated water expand. There's a nut on top of the radiator when facing left hand at the rear a hose to the expansion tank. That's the filling point and while the engine running to circulate the water via the water pump you will hear the gurgling of air coming out same hole.
From memory serves you should flush out the old brown residue water with fresh water before refill 50/50 antifreeze.
The crud is a make up of antifreeze rust from used water hence a good flushing.
As mentioned earlier that the td4 take a while to get warm before even the fans kick in. There's a sensor that triggers when too hot and the thermostat needs replacing if been to long since last service.
Hope this helps

Hi, I've never had any issues with my TD4 after a drain & refill. My drive slopes so with the car parked across it & the expansion tank on the highest side I just fill the system slowly then with the heater on (but no blower) I run it with the expansion cap off, as @saxavordian says they take ages to warm up (even in this weather I'd be surprised if you could get the temperature gauge to get to it's 'normal' just below half way whilst idling. You could put the drivers side on blocks & just run it for a while.
I've also noticed my bottom hose doesn't get that hot,not like the others, so as long as the heater is continuously blowing hot air (not going hot & cold & the temperature gauge remains steady) & your happy everything else is ok I wouldn't worry. Just check the coolant level when it's stone cold & top up if necessary, obviously if you have to keep topping it up, intermittent heater, fluctuating gauge or leaks then you know something is amiss, all the best.

Thanks Guys,

I've just filled it with water to check for leaks after fitting all new parts then will drain and put 50/50 coolant.

Ok Great, I will drain the water and fill from the correct point with 50/50 antifreeze.
Thanks for the advice

Doesn't sound like there's anything wrong to me. What do you think is wrong?

It's perfectly acceptable to fill the Freelander cooling system through the expansion tank, as it's part of the circulation circuit.
The top small hose is there to pass air in the system to the tank, which is then replaced by coolant from the hose in the bottom of the tank.
There is a bleed point up by the heater, which needs to be undone a couple of turns, so any air above the tank can escape, this being carried out when the engine is running.

Top or refill through the expansion tank, slowly

make sure your tank is free from crazing or any cracks, replace if there are any.

Sure this is the bleed nut
