Sorry Guys

I know this has probably been done to death but I'm a newby and can't quite fathom whats up.
Just bought a 2003 TD5, its pretty good, needs some TLC in areas but hey.

One of 2 pressing problems is the rear suspension. Height of NS rear wheel arch above hub centre is 485mm, OS is just 450mm

Height does not change when engines running and all doors shut.

Wondering if it could be ride height sensor arm, does that sound right? Can these get clogged / rusty so they don't work properly but can be cleaned up or do they just break? I can clean it up over Easter but I wont be able to get a new one / pair and get ride height calibration done before Easter.

Also on this, what the general thought on coil replacement? Its going to be used mainly as a road car for now (pleased dont have a go), possibly some towing but hopefully in future a bit of overlanding.

Thanks

if its a seven seat insurance probs changing to coils get it plugged in to see if any faults are logged before you start spending money.plus try and introduce yourself first mate to may one post wonders on this site. Its a great site loads of info but you need to put in before you take out.

In my opinion, air suspension is worth the hassle and expense....I have a 7 seater and I tow my horse. After towing with my 300tdi, which was great of course, with my TD5 and air suspension I wouldn't contemplate changing to coils, ever.

Does the compressor work at all?

1. Push the ORM(off road mode/extended height) switch and see what happens

2. The sensor is not blocked cos if it was the compressor would have overworked by not getting the stop impulse from it.

3. If u can plug in a tester, run circuit tests for both sides and if it's working pump the bags with the tester to even level and store the heights(recalibration)... if no tester available disconnect the battery and swap the sensors between them... it might help...if they look old replace them both, at least u'll know something for good.

Thanks guys appreciate all that.
I have a nuts off roader mate who said throw air bags away, but I'm not doing what he is and sounds like thats duff advice.
And sierrafery thanks for the idea about swaping sensers over.
I promise not to ask any more dumb questions when I get my books
Cheers

Not a dumb question...hate to see you ditch your air springs on a whim. ;)

the sensors on my car, where seized as they bolt onto the trailing arm.
so the arm twisted, easy to check just see if they move or stuck.

easy to fix too :D

oh yeah what ever the cost and hassle keep the air system far better ride.
my 7 seater came with coils, so tested the air system, new bags and a sensor all fitted, and you really can tell how much better is it

Before you do that try stripping the solonoide valves to bits. There are two "O"rins in each that might get dirt in them and the solonoide piston mighr be sticking and just needs cleaning and lubricating. Less than an hour and costs nowt.
Look in common faults section.
