When replacing the oil filter on the td4 where do you think the O ring should go ?

When we changed the oil recently on my son's car we put the O ring in position A, yet within a few miles of motoring it had leaked enough oil to worry greenpeace. So we replaced the filter with the O ring in position B.

Was therefore surprised today when changing the filter on my td4 to find the old O ring in position A yet not a drop had leaked in 5000 miles.

Very interesting - unfortunately I can't vote twice.

Yes - you've guessed it - I have a ring in BOTH positions.

The first filter I ever bought was from BMW for a BMW 320D and it had a whole load of 'O' rings - 2 big ones - one was slightly thicker than the other, one about 25mm diameter for half-way down, a little one for the bottom of the cover shaft in your pic, and it had the copper washer for the sump drain plug as well.

I normally buy Mahle or Mann filters and they have only one large and one small O ring, plus the washer.

I'm renewing the one in position B every change, but I'm interested as to what the poll results will show.

The Haynes Manual is unclear as to A or B.

Singvogel :)

On the last two changes i have done. 'B'

Each oil filter i have bought hasn't had the small 'O' rings. Are these never changed? or should i look at a different make of filter that comes with them.

Cheers:confused:

Mahle filters used to have 2 big rings, a middle size, a small, and the copper drain-plug washer.

Nowadays they have the big ring, the little ring, and the copper washer. Mann filters have the same.

Singvogel.

Hi everyone, small at the bottom and 2p size one in the middle is a must. This will ensure your flow is right and all oil is filtering properly otherwise it is not filtering as it should.
Ash.
