Could someone confirm exactly where the filler is for a TD4 auto box. I am assuming it is the little rubber bung on the r/h side of the engine as you look at it, near the battery tray.

I have the haynes manual but what they show does not look too much like what I have.

Just want to make sure I have the right filler before putting 4 litres of transmission fluid down it.

Thanks

Here is some info for refilling, the level is important for correct operation of the box. The ability to test temperature for level checking has been debated on here before, i'd say best guess for it is to run until gearbox is warm then check.

As far as I knew, it was a filler plug but was very close to a similar looking bolt which if wrongly removed causes loss of reverse gear. Also make sure you've got the proper oil as the auto boxes are very fussy & my garage needed to order it specially from Landrover. Apparently their usual oil supplier thought he could provide a suitable fluid but then found out it was some special stuff. Normally I would do all my own changes but this all looked a little bit too fussy & as Chaser says the level can't be too high or too low without causing problems/possible damage besides I couldn't get the car properly level & get access underneath.

go to the ashcroft transmissions website, and they have a top set of pictures showing EXACTLY what to undo, and more importantly what NOT to undo. The filler plug isn't the problem as it'sonly a rubber bung. It's the drain plug what causes all the confusion. One is an external torx bolt, the other needs an allen key. Not going to commit to which way round it is case I get blamed !

(Bigger boys did it)

Yes it is . . . .and its a reet pig to fill , best run it fer 10 miles first, i used a silicone end adapter to a bit of 4mm tube and a small funnel at the end. . . . .make sure motor is level when draining and leave to dribble [spirit level on both door sills] comes out all smelly and dirty. . . .put a new seal on drain plug. . . . pour in the exact amount as per spec. . . .start in neutral and just run through all selection [including sports and manual , without moving] clears air locks. . . . .then test drive :) :) :)

Yep, yer right of course Opti. It is the drain plug that's the concern.

The gearbox fluid needs to be between 35°C and 40°C to fluid level. You need to use a thermometer in the fluid, or an infrared thermometer on the bottom of the box casing to check this. I use 40°C when checking myself.

Don't drive it with the jatco auto fluid level plug removed. You will empty your auto oil out and fek it up.
Local LR main dealer will supply the correct washers if yer can't find them else where. Most LR part sellers online sell them too.

Got thermometer not inferred one.
One with long metal spike
Put in filler car for box
But it not in transmition oil.
Is my box on car ment to be fooler so it can take temp.

That's why I use the non contact infrared thermometer. ;)
I've never needed to change any washers for fluid changes and I've done loads.;)
