Have done some searching but still got some questions.

Its time my coolant was replaced and the book says Havoline XLC with OAT.

My local car shop place has got ethylyne glycol ? with OAT coolant, its pink/red and £ 18 for 5 litres.

One of my searchs said that different makes of this coolant should not be mixed, and the system must be flushed if changing brands.

So my first question is, will the stuff from the car shop be ok, and do I need to flush out the system ?, ( probably will anyway ), or should I go to the main dealer and get the Havoline stuff.

Second question is. The book capacity says 13 lt, but is it likely that 13 lt will come out ?. ( only so I know how much to buy ).

Any body,s experiences would be welcome.

Cheers.

Del.

All modern antifreeze is ethylyne glycol, OAT or not.
So yes the shop stuff will be ok mine is the Halfords brand, I would not mix manufactures for topping up but it doesn't matter if you are using new suff and you have flushed the system.

I flushed mine three times when changing over from the Rover green/yellow stuff to OAT thats draining and filling with plain water and running the engine for 5min etc each time but that was 6 years ago. Last year it was 5 years old so I just drained, flushed once and refilled again with the Halfords stuff.

I dont understand what you mean about the amount that comes out, you are replacing the coolent like for like so if your cooling system holds 13 ltrs than that is what you will be replacing ie. 50/50 water and antifreeze or whatever the mix is for your disco..

Thanks Discool, thats just the answer I was after. ( and a bit more cheers ).

I ask about the capacity as I want to have enough of the stuff to put back in.

The book says 13 lts, so at 50/50 mix I will need 7 litres. I had read that some people had only been able to get 10 or 11 liters back in.

Cheers again.

you will never get all the coolant out unless you strip the parts down and clean them. the heater matrix allways holds fluid in. just flush with water and refill with 50/50 mix and fill and you will be fine. or if in doubt get an antifreeze tester and check, they're only a few quid

Hi Del, me and a mate renewed his TD5 radiator and flushed the cooling system. You'd be amazed how much rubbish came out !!!

We were able to put in about 8ltrs of mixed coolant. To push out all the plain water we left the bleed screw out to allow fluid out - we watched the quality of what came out until it was the same colour as the coolant going in, then all was ok. No problems since.

That's the way I do it too.:)

Hi Dave.

Just being anal, but if only 8 lt,s of a 50/50 mix went in, does that mean that 5 lt,s of water didnt get any antifreeze with it ?. ( or did you keep adding a 50/50 mix untill all clear water was out ? )

What I,m getting at is, if the whole system holds 13 lt,s then to get a true 50/50 mix, I must add 6.5 lt,s of the fluid ?.

Cheers

With such a small extra investment at least u can slumber........and it wont hurt the cooling system at all

It's not hard, put a couple of litres of water in the rad first than add the 6.5 litres of antifreeze (assuming the system is 13 litres) then slowly top up with water till full. Run the engine till hot, let cool and check the now mixed coolent level, topup with water if required or follow the LR instructions for your vehicle. Job done for 5years..

My cooling system capacity is only 11.3 litres so I use 5 litres of antifreeze, thats protection down to -30c that is as low as my antifreeze tested goes but that wiil do for me :)
