Steering Guard Steel or Aluminium

I am thinking of putting a steering guard on my Disco 1 and cant decide if a heavy steel one or a lighter more expensive one is the way to go, some have suggested that a rigid steel one will transfer stress to the chassis while the aluminium one will deform either sacrificially or be bent back into place.

Any thoughts would be appreciated!

HD Steel..and as regards stress on the chassis...worraloadabolix.

If the alloy one bent in it would pull the chassis in like a cable trying to pull two poles together so thats not a valid view point.
Id go for steel

I'm guessing heavy duty or maybe high definition

Talking of metal. My colleague has just given a 2ft sq bit of 7mm steel plate for free. Will be making my spreader plate out of it later if my Angle Grinder is up to the job

I suppose it depends on the camera you use to take a photo of it!

You can pretty much do anything with an angle grinder, its not so much a question of if its up to the job, its a question of have you got enough disks! Oh and you'll get black snots after too!

You would probably be much better off taking it to a welding/fabrication shop and let them do it with plasma or oxy/acet. Unless to have a fooking huge grinder that is.

If we're talking angle grinder disks, get one of those diamond ones for cutting steel. They're very dear to start with, of course, but you'll never have to buy another. Mine's about seven years old now and is barely worn and has been hard at work grinding over and above the call of duty. Thery're thinner and easier to use accurately too.

when i get round to it im takeing off my big heavy bastard and makeing a alloy one.. its a guard not a battering ram

Steel .. mine's bent now, but it's taken a few very heavy hits .. and the steering bars haven't!
