Starter motor problem!!!

1988 90 County
19J TD engine.
Recently started to have problems starting, in that When turning the key I would get a loud click/clunk from the area of the starter motor, so did the usual tests, battery, connections, etc' then decided to remove.
When I bench tested it the gear (Bendix)?, shoots forward, (obviously the click/ clunk I could hear, but the motor does not spin!
Any suggestions greatly received having exhausted my limited knowledge!

What make of starter motor, How did you bench test , if you dont do properly you wont get a correct/reliable result.
The solenoid fulfills two functions , moves gear into position , which then closes two contacts that cause the bendix to revolve Its what is known as a pre engaged type starter motor

Thanks for replies so far.
Not sure what make, assume it's the original one?
Power source was a good battery that I keep topped up in the garage.
Testing used jump leads direct to motor with Neg' lead direct to one of the bolt holes & Pos' to the solenoid spade connector.

Then either the solenoid switch or the motor is fubar.

I really appreciate the input but that much I had worked out lol!

Anyone got any suggestions how I can further investigate to work out where the fault lies?

You are testing it wrong . you need neg to body of starter, pos to big pos terminal post on solenoid , and then a small wire to jump from pos to spade on solenoid It should then fire the pinion gear forward and as it reaches end of travel should spin . This test will only tell you that you have circuit continuity , as it will not be possible to measure torque delivery at pinion end , or if pinion clutch is slipping .

Just re- tested as advised.
Same result so new motor it is then.

By solenoid switch I mean the contact switch inside the end of the barrel that sends power to the motor when the solenoid piston is activated and shoots down the barrel.

it could be the contacts inside the solenoid or worn brushes in the starter itself, both can normally be replaced if you are a confident / competent, if not I'd recommend going for a exchange.
